MUSEUM 5 FRESH IDEAS HELPED COMPANY Coca-Cola is frequently credited with popularizing the image of a red-and-white suited Santa Claus with Americans. But long before Coca-Cola's widespread marketing campaigns of the 1930s, Jekyll Island Club Member Nathaniel Kellogg Fairbank was advertising Santa Claus Soap. Fairbank owned N.K. Fairbank & Co., a lard and oil refinery which sold popular household products. It produced Cottolene, a predecessor of today's margarine. It also manufactured soap products, including Fairy Soap, Gold Dust Washing Powder, and Santa Claus Soap. Fairbank's company was at the forefront of a new trend towards marketing products on a national level. Through his advertisements, Fairbank helped celebrate and popularize Santa Claus in American culture. Other depictions of Santa Claus preceded Fairbank's advertisements of Santa Claus Soap in the American press. Santa was first found in American literature in 1809, when Washington Irving wrote about St. Nicholas riding over the tree-tops in a wagon, bringing presents to good children. This story was followed by Clement Clarke Moore's poem, "An Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas," first published in 1823. It began with the words "'Twas the night before Christmas" and vividly painted a picture of the "right jolly old elf," dressed in fur, with a snowy white beard, round belly, and rosy cheeks. Illustrators have since tried to capture the appearance of St. Nicholas. In 1863, Thomas Nast depicted Santa Claus with the Union troops during the Civil War, dressed in the Stars and Stripes. Later, Nast published a series of Christmas illustrations, in which he established Santa as a maker of toys, living in the North Pole, keeping records of who was naughty and nice. Nast is recognized as the first to draw Santa in his signature red suit and big leather belt. In the late 1800s, Santa was often shown dressed in furs or cloth suits, particularly in green, but also in red, brown, white, blue, or purple. A printer named Louis Prang introduced Christmas cards to the United States. In 1885, he also printed a Santa that was dressed in red. But Fairbank was one of the first to depict the famous elf in a large-scale marketing campaign. During the 1880s and 1890s, he produced depictions of Santa, both in black-and-white printed newspaper ads and colorful trade cards. Before CocaCola, Fairbank and others helped to standardize the image of Santa Claus in his long, flowing beard and fur-trimmed red suit. Visitors to Jekyll Island may think of kayaking as solely a late spring/summer/early fall activity; but late fall and winter are also a great time to explore the salt marsh by kayak! While on the water in the warmer months, we often see manatees, rays, small sharks, as well as a variety of birds feeding along the marshes edge. But for Jekyll's holiday season visitors, late fall and winter bring to Georgia's barrier islands many birds not seen here at any other time of year. Jekyll Island is a major stop along the Atlantic Flyway, the north-south migration route used by hundreds of bird species. Many birds pause on Jekyll Island to rest and feed during their long flights south, and gliding along the surface of the water in a kayak is a great way to see them! Drive Responsibly Visit your local Department of Driver Services and pickup your Georgia Sea Turtle Center license plate. Proceeds directly benefit the research, rehabilitation and education mission of the center. Late fall into winter is by far the best time of year for ducks, when Hooded and Red-breasted Merganser, Surf Scoter, Bufflehead and others come down from the north. Even the occasional loon can be seen in Jekyll's marshes during the winter. Other fish eaters like Double-crested Cormorants and Forster's Terns also arrive here in large numbers from their northern breeding grounds. g e o r g i a s e a t u r t l e c e n t e r. o r g Winter is also the season that brings our greatest diversity of shorebirds. American Avocets are slender-legged wading birds that follow an unusual west-to-east migration. They spend their summers around prairie ponds and marshes, but many fly east to winter along the warm coasts of Florida and Georgia. Look for them around mud flats. Many sandpipers, ranging from the large Whimbrel to the tiny Ruddy Turnstone and Sanderling, breed in northern Canada in the summer, but return to southern marshes and beaches every winter. 2, 4, 6 Passenger Cars Two Jekyll Island Locations Celebrate With a Purpose~ Come to Jekyll Beverage Center for a great selection of wines and spirits.
