Sponsored by the Georgia Film & Videotape Office, Georgia Night in LA was an enormous success, attracting over 200 attendees. The group was composed of LA - based producers, directors and production managers who have shot in Georgia along with relocated Georgians pursuing their craft in Los Angeles as independent filmmakers, television executives, commercial and music video producers, crew and on-camera talent. The result was a productive networking session and the opportunity to promote and highlight Georgia resources and talent. Film office director Greg Torre was pleased with the turnout and felt that Georgia Night in LA would become an annual affair. "When I'd explain this event, I kept referring to it as a reception for 'friends and family'," Torre said. "Ultimately, it was a great opportunity for us to recognize and celebrate Georgia production talent as well as those Los Angeles production executives who we've come to know and value over the years. With the ramped up support we have from our state government, this marks a renewed effort to be even more active in promoting Georgia resources." Torre and location liaison Lee Thomas represented the Georgia Film & Videotape Office along with Georgia marketing representatives Shay Griffin and Brad Zutaut. Jay Self of the Savannah Film Commission was also in attendance. HBO's BOYCOTT Airs February 24th Photo: (l-r) Terrence Howard, Carmen Ejogo and Jeffrey Wright star in HBO's BOYCOTT. Larry Chernoff, president of the Livewire Entertainment Group comments: "As a company we have built many facilities over the years and always make our biggest efforts in integrating the appropriate technology within a highly creative and functional space. We've learned what works and what doesn't and plan to offer our unmatched corporate support. We are respectful of our Atlanta division and their great client relationships. VTA Marketing Campaign Receives Regional Honors Atlanta-based VTA, one of the country's largest post-production houses, recently received top awards for its marketing and advertising campaign in the Regional Print Design Annual. Two of VTA's corporate identity ads, one entitled Amplify and one entitled Vision, walked away with the prestigious design awards. The designs were entered into competition by VTA's design group, Ivory, an Atlanta agency. The two images were created as part of a trio, the third entitled Touch, which were created to graphically suggest the sensory concepts on which VTA's services are based. Last year VTA officially changed its name from Video Tape Associates, a name for which the company had been known for over thirty years. A new brand, new equipment and expanded services came along with the new name. VTA now uses the high tech logo in all its marketing and collateral materials. The company also launched a full-scale advertising and public relations campaign to communicate the new look, feel and theme, which reflect both VTA's range of services and technology. "Our new name, VTA, is broad enough to reflect all that we are today and all that we are becoming, as we continue to meet the needs of our clients during this technological explosion," said Ken Chambliss, owner and CEO of VTA. "I believe the designs created for our marketing campaign reflect that as well. We're delighted the icons that portray our image have garnered attention and recognition throughout the region as indicated by the announcement of these awards. "These are not overnight changes," Chambliss continued. "VTA has always stayed abreast of developments in technology. Now our image more closely resembles the extent and quality of our services as they have expanded over the years. The company provides a complete finishing environment offering digital linear and non-linear editing, multiple format editing, high definition and standard definition film transfer, audio sweetening, duplication and distribution, as well as a production department. "We're constantly updating our facility," said Chambliss, who has been at the VTA helm for all of its 32 years. "Over the last years we've added some new suites, new equipment and some new personnel and streaming video. But by far our most important offering has always been quality and that comes from the folks who work here. Since the beginnings of the company we have always sought out the finest talent to work at VTA." Recently VTA became the second facility in the U.S., and the fifth worldwide, to install the Innovations-TK Millennium telecine. For more information, visit the VTA website at www.vta.com. Tube Opens Creative Facility Photo: (l-r) Tube owners Michael Curtis and Chris Downs. Since opening its doors less than a year ago, Atlanta's newest creative spot has been flooded with work and is quickly gaining a reputation for being a unique place to post. To announce their presence with a splash, Tube hosted an open house party in early December. Located in a pre-Civil War stone warehouse, the 9,000 square foot loft houses three AVID suites, a 5.1 Dolby Digital Pro Tools 24 suite, a Sonic DVD Fusion suite and a 30' x 25' insert stage with pre-lit cyc. The original framework is still intact, providing an industrially creative atmosphere with a unique vibe. Tube owners, Chris Downs and Michael Curtis, both experienced AVID editors, decided to become partners after recognizing their identical business philosophies at a chance meeting. "We want to do a really good job and have fun doing it," Downs said. "That's the best way to compete and the only way to be creative." In a very short time, the business has evolved into more than a post-production facility. Tube offers CD-ROM and DVD authoring and production, as well as full compression services for the Internet in all industry formats. "Our new interactive suite is a natural offshoot of our core strength and a direct result of client demand," Curtis said. "Clients realize the benefit of our technical and artistic expertise." Shopper's Sourcebook The Shopper's Sourcebook, written and compiled by CREWS agency owner Shirlene Brooks, stylist Lynne Mitchell, and broadcast producer Patrick Hastie, is the first book of its kind for Atlanta. The first edition is filled with valuable information on where to procure prop and wardrobe items in Atlanta as well as other cities throughout the country. Included are helpful hints about Fed Ex drop-off points and a host of other valuable facts that will shortcut shopping and propping. After a year of research and visits to out-of-the-way places, the combined talents of the trio have produced an exciting addition for the Atlanta advertising and film industry. The book will be updated annually. Order online via e-mail to sourcebookatl@mindring.com or by calling 404.874.6623. Actual Reality and The University of Georgia Fight BAC! Turner Classic Movies senior producer, Charlie Coates, once again chose Post Modern Avid editor Christine Deckel as his creative companion to cut Patch It Up, the story behind the reconstruction of the classic documentary Elvis: That's the Way It Is: Special Edition. Patch It Up will be included as the companion piece for the DVD Elvis: That's the Way It Is: Special Edition which will be released by Warner Bros. in January. The nine-minute featurette includes interviews, film clips and stills that tell the story of the $1 million restoration. Coates and Deckel also edited two shorter versions of the final cut that will run on Turner Classic Movies, promoting the film's airdates. Post Modern turned Elvis central. The edit suite was decorated with Elvis posters and rock-n-roll lamps while the sounds of Elvis music could be heard daily. "This was such a fun project," Coates said. "I am a big Elvis fan to begin with and being able to see footage of him just being himself at rehearsals was very cool. Producer Rick Schmidlin, who was responsible for restoring Erich Von Stroheim's classic film Greed, provided a great interview and unique insight into the project." "This piece easily could have been as long as the film," commented Deckel. "We had access to so many compelling photos, interesting sound bites and great footage, that we could have gotten lost. We toiled over what to keep and what to cut, but I feel really good about the final version." Triple Horse Races Into Theaters With a Coke and a smile, Conyers-based Triple Horse Productions will take moviegoers into some scary territory in a theater near you. The classic Universal Studio monsters Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolfman, all make appearances in Coca-Cola's pre-feature entertainment presentation, but don't cry for your mummy just yet - the monsters aren't real. Lurking behind the masks are faces ordinarily seen in a blur as they streak around the racetrack- the NASCAR drivers of the Coca-Cola Racing Family. "Everybody pulled together for an incredible shoot," director Karl Horstmann said. "It was a fantastic crew to work with, but nobody worked any harder than our art department. They were really amazing. The props and costumes really helped the drivers get into their roles." The Triple Horse Productions' scenic department constructed five major sets from classic Universal horror films including a dungeon, a science lab, fog-filled woods and blazing hot desert complete with pyramids and a full-size sarcophagus. In addition to playing classic movie monsters the drivers, Dale Earnhardt, Dale Jarrett, Bill Elliott, Steve Park, Tony Stewart, Bobby Labonte and Jeff Burton also got to re-enact scenes from Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds and Psycho. Joining team Triple Horse, was Mike Tremble, producing for Todd A/O Editworks and Beth Monahan, producing for Coca-Cola.
