(Source: Bild 146-1970-083-42, German Federal Archives.) Kristallnacht, German for "Night of Crystal," also referred to as the "Night of Broken Glass," refers to a wave of violent anti-Jewish pogroms which took place on November 9 and 10, 1938, throughout Germany, annexed Austria, and parts of Czechoslovakia. The name refers to the shattered glass left in violence's aftermath - shards from the windows of synagogues, homes, and Jewish-owned businesses. The destruction was was instigated primarily by Nazi Party officials, members of the SA (Sturmabteilungen or Storm Troopers) and Hitler Youth.
