May 1-8, 2016: Holocaust Days of Remembrance in Georgia Mothers and Fathers: Stories of Love and Loss On April 19, 2016, Governor Nathan Deal signed a proclamation declaring May 1-8, 2016, as "Holocaust Days of Remembrance" in Georgia. Please click here to view the proclamation. The United States Congress established the Days of Remembrance as our nation's annual commemoration of the Holocaust and created the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) as a permanent living memorial to the victims. By Law, the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust is charged with holding an annual remembrance observance for the victims of the Holocaust. The 2016 theme is "Mothers and Fathers: Stories of Love and Loss." Click here to learn more. It has been nearly 5 years since the Netherlands was invaded by Nazi Germany. World War II is finally drawing to a close as Allied forces move through Europe. While the other Allied forces continue their push east towards the Rhine, Canadian forces focus on liberating large cities in the Netherlands. After many weeks of heavy fighting, Germany forces surrendered unconditionally in the Netherlands and Canadian forces liberated Amsterdam the next day. May 8 - Mothers and Fathers: Stories of Love and Loss June 5 - Survivors and Veterans Remember D-Day July 10 - Stories of Rescue "Witness to the Holocaust" traveling exhibit in Savannah The Georgia Commission on the Holocaust's exhibit "Witness to the Holocaust: WWII Veteran William Alexander Scott III at Buchenwald" is on display at the Jewish Educational Alliance in Savannah from April 25, 2016, until May 26, 2016. News Dr. Andrea Videlefsky to receive 2016 Humanitarian Award Dr. Videlefsky is a founding member and current President of Am Yisrael Chai, a nonprofit Holocaust education and awareness organization. She founded The Daffodil Project which aims to build a living Holocaust memorial by planting 1.5 million daffodils around the world to remember and represent the one and a half million children who died in Nazi occupied Europe. Please click here to read more. Brendan Murphy named Distinguished Educator of 2016 Brendan Murphy Murphy is a history teacher at Marist School in Atlanta where he has been teaching since 1994. Murphy developed a World History and Holocaust seminar, titled "Bearing Witness" in 1996 which includes a visit to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washinton, D.C. In 2001, he designed and implemented a class trip to Europe where students visit the places they have studied. Please click here to read more.
