Here is what is new: On This Day: September 1944 Occupants of the Secret Annex are transported to Auschwitz After being discovered, arrested, and interned at Westerbork, the eight inhabitants of the Secret Annex are among 1,019 others on a September 3 transport to Auschwitz. They all survive selection but only one will survive the war. Click here to learn more. Stories of Rescue During the Holocaust Many of the most well-known stories from the Holocaust are stories of rescue. From Oskar Schindler in Germany and Sir Nicholas Winton of the United Kingdom toIrena Sendler in Poland, those who helped save Jews between 1933 and 1945 are not only honored for their actions but hold special places in popular culture through beloved films, books, and even music. You can learn more about two stories of rescue by visiting the Anne Frank in the World exhibit on September 20 for a free screening of the filmWeapons of the Spirit. This documentary tells the true story of the village of Le Chambon-sur Lignon where 5,000 French Christians provided food and shelter for 5,000 Jews. The film is written, produced and narrated by Pierre Sauvage who was born and sheltered in Le Chambon. Then tour the exhibit that tells the story of Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl who hid with her family in an apartment, often referred to as the Secret Annex, in Amsterdam. Admission is free. Read more about rescue during the Holocaust on the blog! 2015 MJCCA Book Festival: My Grandmather Would Have Shot Me Join the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust on as the Community Partner for My Grandfather Would Have Shot Me: A Black Woman Discovers Her Family's Nazi Past on November 19th! Thursday, 11/19/2015 - 7:30pm Location: MJCCA-Zaban Park 5342 Tilly Mill Road Dunwoody, GA 30338 When Jennifer Teege, a German-Nigerian woman, happened to pluck a library book from the shelf, she had no idea that her life would be irrevocably altered. Recognizing photos of her mother and grandmother in the book, she discovers a horrifying fact: Her grandfather was Amon Goeth, the vicious Nazi commandant chillingly depicted by Ralph Fiennes in Schindler's List--a man known and reviled the world over. The more Teege reads about Amon Goeth, the more certain she becomes: If her grandfather had met her--a black woman--he would have killed her. Teege's discovery sends her on a quest to unearth and fully comprehend her family's haunted history. Use code "GACH" when purchasing individual tickets to receive $5 off. September 20 - Weapons of the Spirit October 18 - Curator's Corner: The Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals November 22 - Curator's Corner: Diaries from the Holocaust 10/22 Georgia Council for the Social Studies Annual Conference: "Holocaust ID Cards Activity: Translating Statistics into People" presentation The Georgia Commission on the Holocaust will be presenting a session titled "Holocaust ID Cards Activity: Translating Statistics into People" at the 2015 GCSS conference in Athens, Georgia. The session with provide methodology for a classroom activity utilizing a set of ID cards adapted from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. It is free admisison to the session but attendees must be registered for the conference. Register by credit card or by purchase order/check. Affiliate Event: "Filming the Camps: From Hollywood to Nuremberg" The Atlanta History Center is honored to be one of only two U.S. venues to host the Mmorial de la Shoah's exhibition, Filming the Camps John Ford, Samuel Fuller, George Stevens: From Hollywood to Nuremberg. On display through November 20, 2015, the exhibit explores the experiences of five American filmmakers during and after WWII, their confrontation with Nazi atrocities, and the mark it left on them as artists.
