July 2019 Monthly Update GSLA Expands for 2019-2020 School Year The Governor s School Leadership Academy (GSLA) provides high-quality selective statewide leadership preparation and support designed to develop high-capacity school leaders across Georgia. GSLA includes programs for principals and aspiring principals as well as the new GSLA Teacher Academy which is being launched this year in partnership with Georgia s 16 Regional Education Service Agencies (RESAs). The Teacher Academy will provide support for induction-level teachers and teacher leaders in all areas of the state. GSLA uses a collaborative model to enable a state-wide network of support to develop and retain highly effective educators from induction to school and district leadership. The Aspiring Principal Program will expand to two cohorts for the 2019-2020 school year and kick off in August at the J. Alvin Wilbanks Instructional Support Center in Gwinnett County. The 2019-2020 Principal Support Program has expanded to three cohorts of principals from schools designated as Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) or Promise Schools by the Georgia Department of Education. The program launched in June and will continue through the 2019-2020 school year. The program received positive feedback from students and parents with one parent reporting "I cannot thank you enough for the positive impact this program had on all of the students. Governor Kemp Honored at GAEL Annual Summer Conference Governor Kemp spoke at the 45th Annual Summer Conference of the Georgia Association of Education Leaders (GAEL) at the Jekyll Island Convention Center on Sunday July 14. Outgoing GAEL Executive Director Jimmy Stokes presented Kemp with an award for his education advocacy saying "We have never ever had anybody who spoke up for public education the way that Brian Kemp does."
