GCA Newsletter / Spring 2017 Telfair Museum, Savannah, GA GCA and GPEE Partner to Host Arts Education Critical Issues Forum GCA is working with the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education (GPEE) to host a Critical Issues Forum focused on Arts Learning and the Innovation Workforce. The event will be on Thursday, April 20, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm., at the Georgia Film Academy in Fayetteville, GA. The keynote presentation will feature Rodney Sampson, Partner and Head of Diversity & Inclusion Initiatives at TechSquare Labs, in conversation with Martha Dalton, Education Reporter, at WABE 90.1 FM. The keynote presentation will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Atiba Mbiwan, Associate Director at The Zeist Foundation, with Jeff Stepakoff, Executive Director of the Georgia Film Academy, Syreea Hughley, Learning Center Manager at Google Fiber, and Gif Lockley, Principal at Savannah Arts Academy. Crowds Expected for GCA Regional Meetings GCA to Host Regional Strategic Plan Meetings For 2018, Georgia Council for the Arts is developing a new five-year strategic plan. The strategic plan process will begin this spring with a series of regional meetings to inform the plan, providing an opportunity for constituents to share their vision for how GCA can harness the power and potential of the arts in Georgia to build strong, vibrant communities. Participation is sought from Georgia residents with a wide and diverse set of backgrounds, experiences, expertise, and arts participation levels. Add your voice to the visioning process for how we can work together to amplify and empower the role of the arts in economic development, community development, and education, and increase the impact of the arts throughout the state. Meetings will take place in Gainesville on April 10, in Dublin on May 2, in LaGrange on May 3, and in Atlanta on May 18. Inspired Georgia, UGA Press Inspired Georgia Exhibit Dates and Locations We are pleased to announce that the "Inspired Georgia" photo exhibit will tour the state in 2017 and 2018. Each venue will serve as a host for these remarkable images, along with literary events celebrating local poets in each region of the state. Communities hosting the exhibit include Albany, Zebulon, Milledgeville, Rome, and Statesboro. Opening dates and program details are available on the GCA website. "Inspired Georgia" was born from a collaboration between Georgia Council for the Arts, Georgia Poet Laureate Judson Mitcham, Atlanta Celebrates Photography (ACP) and UGA Press. The volume is a unique collection of Georgia's contemporary poets and photographers that engages the history and culture of the state. Purchase your copy of the book here. Georgia's Creative Economy Brochure Cover GCA Updates Georgia's Creative Economy Data GCA recently announced that the state's creative industries generated $62.5 billion in annual economic impact. The creative industries in Georgia represent a combined $37 billion in revenue and employ an estimated 200,000 Georgians statewide, making up five percent of employment in the state. In support of the new economic impact numbers, GCA released an updated digital brochure for Georgia's Creative Economy which outlines information on the impact, institutions, and communities that fuel the creative industries in our state. With a booming film and television industry, a long-standing tradition of writing and recording music, emerging gaming and digital media firms, and some of the most revered cultural institutions in the southeastern U.S., Georgia is a nexus for creativity and industry. Some of GCA's Teaching Artists in Action GCA Teaching Artists Registry Call for Applications In an effort to provide up-to-date resources to schools and organizations, and to help promote the work of our state's best teaching artists, Georgia Council for the Arts is updating and expanding our existing Teaching Artists Registry. Qualified teaching artists must be a resident of Georgia, must have a combination of training in their field and experience in educational settings, and must pass a background check. The Teaching Artists Registry application form is available online. The deadline to apply is April 28, 2017. Rome Shakespeare Festival, Rome, GA GCA Announces Vibrant Communities Call for Artists GCA provides a list of qualified Georgia artists to give communities ideas about the types of projects that could be supported by a Vibrant Communities grant. In support of that endeavor, GCA is announcing a call for artists to submit information for consideration to be added to the Vibrant Communities Artist List. To apply, review the application instructions and complete the application form available on the GCA website. The application deadline is May 15, 2017. For questions, contact Allen Bell at abell@gaarts.org. 2017 Georgia POL State Champ Samara Huggins Poetry Out Loud State Finals Results GCA recently announced the winner of the 2017 Poetry Out Loud state competition. Samara Huggins, a senior at Whitefield Academy in Mableton, Ga., took home the first place prize at the state finals hosted by the Atlanta History Center. Samara will represent Georgia at the national finals in Washington, D.C., April 24-26. Poetry Out Loud is a national program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the Poetry Foundation which encourages high school students to learn about poetry through memorization and recitation of the written word. Georgia's Poetry Out Loud champion receives $200 from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Her school will also be presented with a $500 certificate that will go toward new books. The Poetry Out Loud runner-up, Valyn Turner, a junior at Lanier High School in Sugar Hill, Ga., receives $100 from the NEA, and $200 for new books for her school. Philip Bates, Darien, GA Call for Information About Georgia Arts & Aging and Arts & Corrections Programs GCA is collecting information about existing programs related to Arts & Aging and Arts & Corrections in our state. Savannah Music Festival, Savannah, GA Call for Grant Panelists for Project, Partner, and Arts Education Grants GCA is seeking individuals interested in serving on Grant Review Panels in the coming months for Partner, Project, and Arts Education Program Grants. We seek to develop panels which are diverse based on where in the state panelists reside, the artistic disciplines in which they have expertise, and the type of organizations for which they work, among other factors. We are especially interested in recruiting panelists who live outside of the metro Atlanta area. If you are interested in serving as a grant panelist, please send a short bio or resume to Tina Lilly at tlilly@gaarts.org. Moving in the Spirit, Atlanta, GA GCA Partner, Project, and Arts Education Program Grants Update The deadlines for Partner, Project, and Arts Education Program Grant applications recently passed, so this is the time of year when applicants are curious about when panels will meet and grant announcements will be made. To answer some of your questions in advance, we put together a timeline of the grant review and notification processes. March - Completion check by GCA staff; panelists are confirmed, assigned, and trained by GCA staff; panelists receive application materials April - Panelists review applications and submit preliminary scores May - Panelists participate in panel meetings and submit final scores June - Final scores are tabulated by GCA staff; grants are calculated based on application scores and available funding July - GCA makes grant announcements and distributes contracts to grantees August - Grantees return signed contracts and other required documents to GCA More Arts News and Opportunities The Georgia Department of Education has created an informative Fine Arts Report for 2016. National Endowment for the Arts recently published a Guide to Community-Engaged Research in the Arts & Health. Lincoln Center recently released a valuable resource for organizations interested in supporting artist fellowships - Investing in the Arts: The Artist Fellowship Toolkit. The Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP) recently produced their Special Report on career skills and entrepreneurship training for artists based on the results of their 2015 survey module. Harold Dale, Jekyll Island, GA Reminder: FY17 Project Grant and Arts Education Program Grant Final Report Deadline Reminder FY17 Project Grant and Arts Education Program Grant Final Reports are due 30 days after the end of the project, and no later than July 31, 2017. Instructions for the FY17 Final Report can be found here. All final reports should be submitted using the organization's GO account, which was used to submit the original grant application. South Arts is currently accepting applications for Literary Arts Touring Grants (deadline is May 1) and Launchpad (presenter professional development program application available through June 1).
