BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA 
 
A PROCLAMATION 
CONGENITAL DISORDERS OF GLYCOSYLATION AWARENESS DAY 
 
WHEREAS: 
 
Congenital Disorders of Glycosylation (COG) are a group of rare metabolic disorders that affect normal organ development and the neurological system. Children, adolescents, and adults afflicted by COG may be impaired with significant physical and developmental disabilities; and 
 
WHEREAS: 
 
COG is severely under-diagnosed or misdiagnosed in a number of patients . Currently there are about 1,000 cases of COG reported in the U.S.; and 
 
WHEREAS: 
 
Early diagnosis of COG is important to ensure effective management of clinical complications, genetic counseling, treatment, and therapeutic remedies; and 
 
WHEREAS: 
 
Increased awareness about the existence of COG will lead to more timely diagnoses for afflicted individuals and more effective medical care for those diagnosed; now 
 
THEREFORE: 
 
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim May 16, 2016 as Congenital Disorders of Glycosylation Awareness Day in Georgia.
