BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA A PROCLAMATION OPERATION LIFESAVER MONTH WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: Operation Lifesaver is a nonprofit nationwide public education program to help reduce train-vehicle collisions, fatalities, and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings. It also serves to reduce trespassing incidents on railroad tracks and rail property; and This year marks the 40th anniversary of Operation Lifesaver in Georgia, and many special activities are being scheduled throughout the year, including the new "See Tracks? Think Train" campaign; and Many state agencies, businesses, and civic organizations have joined Georgia Operation Lifesaver over the years, and these dedicated volunteers have helped reduce Georgia's highway-rail crossing collisions by over 80 percent at its 8,000 public and private at-grade/level crossings since the program's inception; and Free training programs for all first responders, professional truckers, and school bus drivers will continue to be offered as well as safety educational presentations for the general public; and WHEREAS: THEREFORE: As part of the 40th anniversary celebration, special Operation Lifesaver Whistle-Stop trains will be conducted through Georgia, sponsored by Norfolk Southern, to heighten awareness of train and railroad safety; now I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia do hereby proclaim May 2014 as OPERATION LIFESAVER MONTH in Georgia and urge all our citizens to drive safely and cautiously when approaching a highway-rail crossing, to obey the law by always yielding to oncoming trains, and to avoid trespassing on railroad tracks and railroad property.
