BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA A PROCLAMATION VIETNAM VETERANS DAY WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: THEREFORE: On March 29, 1973, the last American troops were withdrawn from South Vietnam, thus ending the longest war in our country's history; and Due to the controvers ial nature of the long conflict, many of the return ing veterans did not receive the respect and gratitude they deserved for serving their nation; and In the more than a quarter century si nce its unveiling, the Vietnam Memorial has hel ped heal a nation deeply divided by the Vietnam War and has paid eternal tribute to the more than 58,000 U.S. service members who made the ultimate sacrifice; and Of the names listed on the Vietnam Memorial Wall , 1,582 are from the State of Georgia. Vietnam Veterans Day i s an opportun ity to recal l, i n a spirit of pride and gratitude, the heroic accomplishments of service members who gave their lives and all those who served our country during the Vietnam conflict; now I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim March 29, 201 3, as VIETNAM VETERANS DAY i n Georg ia and i nvite al l citizens, both in public ceremonies and i n private t houghts and prayers, to gratefully acknowledge ou r Vietnam Veterans .
