A proclamation: Fabry Disease Awareness Month, Feb. 11, 2013

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA

A PROCLAMATION

FABRY DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH

WHEREAS:

Fabry disease is a rare, progressive, and life-threatening inherited genetic disorder that causes children and adults to suffer a cascade of life-altering symptoms, including pa in, decreased ability to perspire, unexplained fevers, and gastrointestinal upset. These symptoms often progress to include hearing loss, lung disease, kidney disease, cerebrovascular disease, heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failures; and

Fabry disease is caused by deficient activity of the lysosomal enzyme alphagalactosidase A that causes an insufficient breakdown of lipids. Lipids build up to harmful levels in the body, causing lysosomal and cellular dysfunction; and
Fabry disease is often under-recognized and misdiagnosed. When diagnosed, it is often too late after irreversible organ damage has already occurred. Increased physician and fami ly education are critical to increase disease recogn ition; and
The current estimate of Fabry disease incidences in the United States is one in 50,000 males and an even higher percentage of females. Recent newborn screen ing studies in other countries suggest there are likely to be 20 t i mes as many males with late-onset Fabry disease in the United States; and

Enzyme assay tests for males and molecu lar DNA tests for females can test for Fabry disease. It is vital that awareness is raised to fight th is trag ic but t reatable disorde r; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim April 20 13, as FABRY DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH in Georgia and urge our citizens to learn more about this terrible condition .
