.. ..~ ~ ~ BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: T HEREFORE: A PROCLAMATION LITERACY WEEK Approximate ly one in five American adults cannot read or write , and in Georg ia, approximately 1.2 million adults over the age of 18 have not completed high school or received aGED diploma; and Illiteracy rates are the highest among the economically disadvantaged and are closely associated with unemployment, high crime rate, and we lfare dependency; and Illiterate parents perpetuate an inter-generational cycle of illiteracy by being unable to teach their own children such daily tasks as how to read a medicine bottle, follow a bus schedule, do comparative shopping, make correct change, or prepare school homework; and Illiteracy is a social prob lem of American society wh ich can be alleviated by increased public awareness, broader support for literacy programs through public l ibraries, workp lace literacy programs, schoo l literacy p rograms, and vo lunteer l iteracy programs on the local, state, and national leve ls; and I, Nathan Deal, Governor of the State of Georg ia, do hereby proclaim t he week of September 10-16, 2012 as LITERACY WEEK in Georgia, and the day of September 8, 2012 as LITERACY DAY in Georg ia.
