- - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - ..... ~ BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA A PROCLAMATION GIRLS AND WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY WHEREAS: Athletics play an important role in the deve lopment of discipline, initiative, confidence and leadership skil ls; and WHEREAS: Participation of women and girls in sports activities conti nues to increase in Georgia, and their achievements and contributions are noteworthy. Women ' s sports have increased at all levels, from elite competit ions to commun ity programs ; and WHEREAS: It is vital to recogn ize the positive i nfluence sports can have on growin g gir ls through role models such as coaches and sports f igures , friendships that span social barriers and experiences shared through athletics ; and WHEREAS: Invo lvement in sports provides girls w ith an opportunity to build confi dence, develop their emotional and physical well -being, as we ll as cu lt ivate commun ication and cooperation skills. It also promotes healthy bodies and minds as it increases flexi bility, stami na and coordination; and WHEREAS: Thi s year, t he NGWSD adopted the theme 'Tit le IX at 40: In It For the Long Run, " to recognize th is law's im pact on women i n sports; now THEREFORE: I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim February 1, 2012, as GIRLS AND WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY i n Georgia and encourage all women and gir ls in ou r state to support or take part i n sporting activities.
