BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: THEREFORE: A PROCLAMATION CREDIT UNION DAY Credit unions are not- for- profit cooperatives founded by people working together towards economic advancement, uniting people that are seeking a way to improve their future; and Credit unions call for the pooling of personal resources and leadership abilities for the good of the cooperative, encourage a regular habit of saving so those in need may borrow, and foster the desire to repay loans so members may have access to credit when it is needed; and Credit unions empower people to improve their economic situations. In Georgia, there are 152 credit unions currently serving the financial needs of 1.8 million members. They have championed the idea that people from all walks of life should have access to affordable financial services; and Credit unions offer a variety of financial services in addition to deposit accounts, including consumer and small business loans, home banking, checking accounts, debit cards, and various insurance products; and Credit unions have shown resilience throughout the tough economic t imes and have developed strong alliances that make financial democracy possible i n many countries around the world. They have shown outstanding leadership throughout the communities in which they have served since they were founded in the United States more than 100 years ago; now I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim October 20, 2011, as CREDIT UNION DAY in Georgia, and encourage all citizens to recognize the many contributions credit unions have made to the communities in this state and beyond.
