The Georgia Department of Education: Educational Technology & Media Newsletter April 2003 Vol. 1 No. 7 Judy Serritella, Coordinator of Library Media Services, Georgia Department of Education jserrite@doe.k12.ga.us New Web Site! The Department of Education has a new website. The URL (www.gadoe.org) is the same, but the look is new! This is the first major overhaul since 1996. The site has over 45,000 visitors every week and the new design will make searching much easier. Information Technology is in the first drop down box. Scroll down to "Inside DOE" and at the very bottom you will find "Information Technology." Choose "Educational Technology & Media" and here you will find information pertinent to library media centers. The GLC site is located on the top bar under "Quality Core Curriculum." A library media specialist is a teacher, an information specialist, and an instructional consultant. With the amount of information available on the Internet, it is a necessity that our students and teachers become information literate. Our students must develop the ability to recognize the need for information, be able to identify and locate the appropriate sources, recognize methods to obtain the information, and determine if the information is valuable, reliable, and appropriate. The students should also be able to organize and use the information properly. These facts are taken from Information Power and the DOE Exemplary Media Program rubric. Email jserrite@doe.k12.ga.us Friends Get Stuck on This Idea! Jonie Fitzsimmons of Mountainside Elementary in Ft. Carson, Colorado has given me permission to use this clever idea. She teaches in a P-5 school, but for this project she worked mainly with grades 2 through 5. She purchased 3000 cancelled international stamps from a local store at a cost of about $25.00. Each student who participated was given a sheet with 6 squares (see below). Each day the student is given one stamp and must interpret the stamp to determine what country the stamp is from, the capital of the country and what continent it is on. Jonie provides a site through the school's web site that allows the child to obtain the information. http://www.ffc8.org/mountainside/dept/library/libstamp.htm When the information is completed, spelling and capitals properly added, the child gets another stamp from another country. They are allowed one stamp per day. Jonie actually gives the student a cancelled USA stamp initially so they can relate to the information. Jonie says that kids like anything free and are actually learning to access information, problem solve and learn a little geography in the process. It gives them a little computer time, a little sense of accomplishment and again, something free. Jonie received a $1,000 grant using this idea and used the money to purchase world maps for some of the classrooms. She said that typically this project lasts about two months each spring.
