You will receive minimal emails about conferences, board policies, and staff development opportunities. When you subscribe to the list service, you will receive information on how to unsubscribe. To sign up for the list service use your email provider (home or school-wherever you wish to receive your mail). Send a message to: join-doemedia@list.doe.k12.ga.us Do not put anything in the subject area or the body of the message. You will receive a confirmation email to which you will need to respond. That's all you need to do. The Department of Education is excited about this opportunity to communicate with the library media specialists in the state. Ed Tech Competitive Grants http://techservices.doe.k12.ga.us/edtech/comp_grant.htm On September 12, 2002, the State Board of Education approved a plan for FY2003 Educational Technology Competitive Grants. According to this plan, 122 local education agencies (LEA's) in Georgia with high levels of economic and academic need will be eligible to apply for competitive Enhancing Education Through Technology (Ed Tech) grants. Applications for this program will be due to the Georgia Department of Education on December 13, 2002. Georgia Department of Education Linda C. Schrenko, State Superintendent of Schools November 1, 2002 Page 1 of 6 All Rights Reserved Georgia Department of Education Educational Technology & Media Vol. 1 No. 2 Total statewide funding for the program is 8.8 million dollars and system-level awards will range from $75,000-300,000 depending on the number of schools with high academic need in the system. Awardees will use these grants to improve academic achievement through the use of technology at selected Title I schools. Funding for this program is provided under Title II, Part D of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act "No Child Left Behind" (2001). These funds are in addition to the 8.8 million dollars in formula-driven Ed Tech funds that are allocated to every system in Georgia from the same funding source. In the past few weeks, the Georgia Department of Education has developed a web site listing the eligibility criteria, eligible systems, award information, and other important details pertaining to the grant. The site also contains information on seven Grant Info Sessions and Workshops (Nov. 1-15 throughout the state) designed to help school systems produce high-quality proposals. We encourage you to visit this site at: http://techservices.doe.k12.ga.us/edtech/comp_grant.htm If your school qualifies for the grant, volunteer to serve on your school's grant committee. We all know about tight budgets and this could be a way to secure technology funding to support your school improvement needs. Congratulations Bulloch County! The Bulloch County School System was awarded a $241,000 federal grant for Improving Literacy Through School Libraries. The Bulloch County School District will improve each of its 15 school library media centers serving approximately 8,500 students. The district intends to focus on the identified need for better collections in the content areas, particularly science. By acquiring more books for libraries, raising the level of cooperation between media centers and the classroom, and increasing access to technology, the district intends to help all students academically. You can contact Dianne Bath at 912-764-1601 or at dbath@bulloch.k12.ga.us for more information. Georgia Department of Education Linda C. Developed by the American Library Association (ALA) and Morningstar Foods Inc., maker of HERSHEY'S Milk, Drive to Read promotes the role of libraries and librarians by igniting interest in reading among America's teens. The program, which officially launches the week of November 11, 2002,challenges teens across the country to talk about their favorite literary heroes. Based on a title from the Young Adult Library Services Association's (YALSA) 2002 Best Books for Young Adults list, teens will submit an entry describing which character seems most heroic to them. Teens may work alone or with their peers in teams of up to four and are encouraged to be creative in their submissions. They can write an essay, monologue or poem; paint a mural; or produce a video. Before teens send in their entry, a librarian must agree to sponsor it. One lucky teen or team and the sponsoring librarian will win a trip to Miami in spring 2003 to meet NASCAR driver Ward Burton, program spokesperson and last year's Daytona 500 winner. A jury of YALSA members and teens will choose the winner(s) next April. Librarians can now access online tools to help promote the Drive to Read program at their library. All tools are available by visiting www.ala.org/@yourlibrary and clicking on the Drive to Read @ your library icon or checking out www.hersheysmilk.com/events/drivetoread. Tools include free downloadable posters and bookmarks; artwork of the official Drive to Read logo; sample press materials; and programming ideas. Librarians also can request free copies of a Drive to Read poster and bookmarks that will be sent directly to their library. Because of limited quantities, only one order will be shipped per library/media center. Teens aren't the only ones invited to get in on the fun. Libraries can win prizes for getting involved in the program. The first 100 libraries to register at the Drive to Read Web site will receive coupons for free Hershey's Milk. In addition, librarians can enter the race through the Librarians in the Driver's Seat contest. The contest will award prizes to the three librarians who coordinate the most compelling local promotions in connection the Drive to Read @ your library program. More details about the Librarians in the Driver's Seat contest are available in the librarians section of the Drive to Read Web site at www.hersheysmilk.com/events/drivetoread/librarians.asp. The Kids' GALILEO page is now up and running at: http://kids.galileo.usg.edu. This new page is a result of a development and testing process involving the K-12 steering committee, GALILEO staff, several participating institutions, and students from seven to fifteen years old. The goal of the GALILEO Kid's page is to simplify GALILEO by limiting the number of choices to only a few of the best sources specifically designed for younger users. The page resembles an MP3 player and has mouse over information. The intended audience for the GALILEO Kids' Page is students in third grade to middle school.
