CTAE State Newsletter Audrey Bergeron, State Director May 2011 As we begin the completion of another school year, I want to thank all of you--teachers, administrators, and my staff at DOE for the long hours you work and dedication you show every day. As I continue to say throughout the state, teaching is hard work. It requires professionals that have a passion for seeing that our students graduate from high school with the education and skills necessary to help each of them be successful. Without our dedicated teachers at the elementary, middle and high school levels, our student's success would not be possible. We always have to remember that each of our students is somebody's child! I heard an interesting quote recently that is so appropriate for Career Technical Education. "America Runs on the Wheels of CTE" If you think about that small statement, you realize that without our skilled workforce prepared in part by our CTE programs, we would not have mechanics, nurses, teachers, builders, surveyors, graphic artists, landscapers, technicians in every field, truck drivers, dietitians, machinists....I just realized that I could go on and on forever. I hope you realize the impact you have not only on our students but on the economic success of our nation. As you look forward to the summer, I hope each of you will take time to relax and take time to enhance your professional skills. I encourage you to take advantage of some great professional learning offered in each of our program areas and/or the Career Clusters Institute in June and our GACTE Conference in July. I look forward to seeing each of you this summer. A total of 193 gold medallions were awarded to competitors from across the state. Gold Medalists from the State Championships will advance to the National Championships held from June 20-25, 2011, in Kansas City, Missouri. These championships allowed students to take the skills, knowledge and experience gained in their classrooms to a whole new level. Contests were based on industry standards, and business partners designed and judged the competition. These students excelled at the competition due to involvement in high school programs throughout the state focusing on ACCT, Culinary Arts, Personal Care Services, and Public Safety Pathways. Make plans now to be a part of the excitement next year and participate in a full year of SkillsUSA Georgia activities. To learn more about how to become involved, visit our website at www.skillsusageorgia.org. Construction Education Foundation of Georgia (CEFGA) CEFGA has done it again! This year's Expo and SkillsUSA State Championships proved to be another banner year! 300+ companies, 200+ schools and 6300+ people add up to a great event! CEFGA along with foundations such as Transportation Education Foundation of Georgia (TEFGA), New Media Education Foundation of Georgia (NMEFGA) and Printing and Imaging Association of Georgia (PIAG), partnered with SkillsUSA Georgia to make it happen. There were many positive comments from everyone involved, but the best by far is, "it feels like nationals!" (A referral to SkillsUSA National competitions in Kansas City). We are working to connect our partner companies with the Nationals bound construction competitors to help them prepare for the competition. We will look for as many of those opportunities as possible. Good luck to the competitors in Kansas City! Planning for next year's event has already begun. CEFGA is working to have "Careers in Construction Week" declared by the Governor for the sixth year in a row. All things working well, we will celebrate that week on October 17-21, 2012. We will work again with our partner companies to connect with schools all over the state to celebrate Careers in Construction Week. There will be more to come. CEFGA will roll out Sequence platform to all teachers of accredited/certified programs around the state at the GACTE conference. This new technology tool will help students connect with industry partners and learn to begin to see how technology works in the construction field. It will also be a tool to help our teachers as they do their jobs! Be sure and stay connected by visiting our website, www.cefga.org. You can also connect with other CEFGA partners through the CEFGA Connections Forum. Camp T&I The 2011 Camp T&I workshops will be held in Savannah during the week of June 13. Trade and Industrial Educators of Georgia (TIEGA) TIEGA members are also SkillsUSA advisors. The TIEGA Board of Directors has been very successful in focusing instruction regarding new techniques, tactics and technology within the various program areas at their annual winter conference. TIEGA members are focused on education and advancement opportunities for their SkillsUSA students. Great efforts are made at the conference to raise funds in order to support student travel and fund the annual SkillsUSA Kansas City VIP event. This event gives leaders in business, education, and policymakers an opportunity to learning more about SkillsUSA. Sheree' Tovey, TIEGA President, awarded medals at the SkillsUSA Georgia State Conference. Sheree' understands how SkillsUSA fundraisers help students succeed. She tells the story of a young man from North Cobb High School awaiting his turn to receive a Gold Medal for the Criminal Justice competition. She found out that he would not be able to attend the national competition. His parents were struggling financially and the trip would be far beyond their means. She was able to tell him he was being awarded a scholarship that would finance his trip to Kansas City. The jubilant young man dropped to the floor and then leaped high into the air! With tears in his eyes, he hollered, "I get to go to Nationals"! During the past six years, TIEGA has raised over $100,000 for student travel scholarships from fundraisers such as auctions and the Flight of Fancy Fundraiser held throughout the year. Printing and Imaging Association of Georgia (PIAG) The Printing and Imaging Association of Georgia (PIAG) and Heidelberg USA hosted and co-sponsored the 2011 SkillsUSA Graphic Communications Competition. This year's event took place March 17-18, 2011, at Heidelberg USA in Kennesaw. Twenty-six students, representing 20 Georgia high schools, competed in both Graphics Communications and Advertising Design competitions. Graphic Communications students competed in the Pre-press, Offset press, and Finishing categories while the Advertising Design students were given three hours to compose an advertisement for Godiva Chocolatiers using Adobe InDesign CS5 software. All the students completed oral and written assessments. Winners in the Graphic Communications competition included: Christina Hillman of Effingham High School (1st place), Regino Zavalo of Johnson High School (2nd place), and Robbie Chontos of Sandy Creek High School (3rd place).
