CTAE State Newsletter September 2009 Volume 9 Number 1 In this issue: Gary Steppe State Director Emily Spann, Development and Transition Unit Scott Carey, Program Delivery Unit John Bridges, Agricultural Education Unit Contact Us http://www.gadoe.org/ci_c ta.aspx Gary Steppe, State Director gsteppe@doe.k12.ga.us In these times of economic slowdown much time is spent by the media telling us how awful things are and that there is nothing but gloom and doom all around. It's easy to feel depressed, and be pessimistic about the future, to view our glass as half empty rather than half full. I, on the other hand, would encourage you to be thankful. To this point, our CTAE programs have weathered the economic storms pretty well. We have been able to maintain most of what is essential to quality CTAE programs at the school level. Because of your hard work and dedication, our programs have continued to make great progress. The skill sets our students are graduating with today are much better than they were only a few years ago. Our students shine in national competitive events. We have the third most students involved in CTSOs of any state, only behind the much larger states of California and Texas. Our student leadership programs are among the best, if not the best, in the country. We are still being supported by our lawmakers at the Federal level through Perkins dollars and at the State level by our Georgia Legislators even though neither group has as many dollars as usual. Our schools remain a tower of strength in our local communities, where quality education continues each day. Amongst the negativity, there is much to be proud of and thankful for. We are truly blessed. Another highlight for CTAE is the recent unanimous approval by the State Board of Education of the new Phase IV High School and Phase II Middle School GPS! We appreciate greatly the hard work and efforts provided by local system pathway development team members from your schools! As national end-of-pathway assessments leading to National Credentials for your students are identified and made available over the next months, please encourage your students to complete a pathway and take full advantage of these future career-opening opportunities! Scott Carey, Program Delivery scarey@doe.k12.ga.us We are off to a great start this year. Participation in leadership activities for our students is holding its own. Thank you for your continuing support! Architecture, Construction, Communication and Transportation Sonny Cannon at gcannon@doe.k12.ga.us Architecture & Construction Industry accreditation/certification workshops are now posted on the CTAE Resource Network at ctaern.org. These workshops will only be offered once this school year. The Construction Education Foundation of Georgia (CEFGA) CEFGA continues to raise industry support for high school programs around the state. This year brings another opportunity for CEFGA and The Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America to work with regional alliances in middle, south, and southwest Georgia. The Construction Education Foundation of America, AGC of America and their industry partners continue to bring awareness of high school programs to the construction industry, and support from the industry to the high schools. Because of CEFGA's strategic efforts to build opportunities in the Columbus and East Central Georgia regions, programs in these regions will receive additional support through industry and grant resources. There are ongoing efforts to provide the Coastal Georgia Region with the same opportunities. Printing and Imaging Association of Georgia (PIAG) Update Graphic Communications instructors offer valuable information and lesson plans via the Internet at http://graphcommnet.ning.com/. Recent additions include lesson plans on Making a Successful School Design and Designing Personal Identity. Past lesson plans include Illustrator labs, and lessons on kerning, tracking and scaling. In addition, PIAG's blog The Mentor has links to video of presentations from this summer's Camp T&I program. Blog stories from July and August 2009 give links to video programs on GaDOE grants and the PrintED process. Frank Romano talks about the future of printing, and what to teach your students. PIAG has joined Twitter (PIAGGeorgia). This is a great way for teachers to stay informed on timely topics within the industry. Transportation Air Career, Technical and Agricultural Education and The Transportation Education Foundation of America (TEFGA) are working with Cessna Aircraft Company and Gulfstream to develop a partnership that will support our aviation pathways and SkillsUSA. We are always open to suggestions for future tools! Engineering and Technology Ron Barker at rbarker@doe.k12.ga.us Recently, Jody Reeves sent an email to the Department regarding a webinar. Quoting her email: "Just making sure that all of you know about the webinar this morning from the National Academy of Engineering. Should have some very good information for us as we move our Engineering program/curriculum forward." The webinar coincided with the release of a study sponsored by Stephen Bechtel, Jr., of the Bechtel Group Inc., with additional support from the National Academies and both indicated that K-12 education should include engineering. The report is titled "Engineering in K-12 Education: Understanding the Status and Improving the Prospects." It is a timely document worthy of review. In part, the document indicated that: The introduction of K-12 engineering education has the potential to improve student learning and achievement in science and mathematics, increase awareness about what engineers do and of engineering as a potential career, and boost students' technological literacy, according to a new report from the National Academy of Engineering and the National Research Council. The report examines the status and nature of efforts to teach engineering in U.S. schools. "The problem solving, systems thinking, and teamwork aspects of Engineering can benefit all students, whether or not they ever pursue an engineering career," said Linda Katehi, chancellor of the University of California, Davis, and chair of the committee that wrote the report. "A K-12 education that does not include at least some exposure to engineering is a lost opportunity for students and for the nation." Engineering education at the K-12 level should emphasize engineering design and a creative problemsolving process, the committee said. It should include relevant concepts in mathematics, science, and technology, as well as support the development of skills many believe essential for the 21st century, including systems thinking, collaboration, and communication. While science, technology, engineering, and mathematics instruction is collectively referred to as "STEM education," the report finds that the engineering component is often absent in policy discussions and in the classroom. In fact, engineering might be called the missing letter in STEM, the report says. In preparing the report, the committee conducted an in-depth analysis of 15 K-12 engineering curricula; reviewed scientific literature related to learning engineering concepts and skills; evaluated evidence on the impact of K-12 engineering education initiatives; and collected preliminary information about pre-collegiate engineering education programs in other countries. The information presented reflects several of the initiatives that are currently underway in Georgia. As a member of the consortium, we are using the materials across the state. It is interesting to note that materials from the International Technology Education Association (ITEA), Consortium to Advance the Teaching of Technology and Science (CATTS), "Engineering by Design" (EbD) were noted in the study, as well as, "Engineering the Future" materials from the Boston Museum of Science. Georgia is working with these materials in two systems. We look forward to seeing your teachers at the GETEA conference in October as well as the Georgia TSA events in September, October, and November. Your support makes the difference as we move our Engineering program/curriculum forward. John (Chip) Bridges, Agricultural Education jbridges@doe.k12.ga.us The agricultural education model has been tested and proven successful in Georgia for more than 80 consecutive years. The three ring model allows for students enrolled in agricultural education courses to explore an appropriate Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE) program of study and test the skills learned in the classroom by participation in the FFA. All three component of the agricultural education model are interlocking and of equal importance to the success of any quality AG-ED program. As we take a moment to reflect on the success of the Georgia FFA Association during the past year, it is important to always remember that the FFA is Intra-Curricular and that the results of a student's success as an FFA member is directly related to great instruction and a quality program of study. Curriculum -The new pathway lessons are posted on the Agricultural Education website.
