There is a lot of buzz around the nation right now about rigor, relevance, standards national assessments and "greening" of our programs. Much excitement is being generated around stimulus money, workforce development and CTAE. These are times when opportunities present themselves. Agriculture Education Unit CTAE Curriculum Drafts for Public Review Contact Us www.gadoe.org/ci_cta.aspx The High School Phase IV and Middle School Phase II GPS curriculum drafts will be posted for a ninety day period of public review beginning after the May 14, 2009 State Board of Education please encourage participation in reviewing the curriculum drafts and completing the accompanying online feedback form that is accessible through GeorgiaStandards.org or the CTAE/GaDOE homepage. Small Business Development End-ofPathway Assessment Pilot The CTAE Division would like to thank the following systems and schools for their participation in the Small Business Development End-of-Pathway Pilot Testing Activities: DeKalb County (Avondale, Lithonia, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Stephenson High Schools); Chatham County (Johnson High School); Cobb County (Osborne High School); Effingham County (Effingham County and South Effingham High Schools). Two hundred (200) Career Pathway Completers took the Fundamental Business Concepts exam, a national exam dispensed by the ASK Institute as the end-of-pathway assessment for Small Business Development. Some DeKalb County students took the exam during the month of April, while the majority of students tested during the week of May 4-8. CTAE Professional Learning Update CTAE Summer Workshops Summer CTAE professional learning opportunities are being posted daily on the CTAE Resource Network website at www.ctaern.org. Please make sure that your teachers and staff check the CTAE Resource Network website on a regular basis to stay abreast of the most current training events available. GACTE Summer Conference Make plans to attend the 62nd annual GACTE Summer Conference, from July 19-22, 2009, at the Cobb Galleria Center & Renaissance Waverly Hotel. The theme of the conference will be "CTAE All Stars." Pre-Registration Deadline for GACTE: June 29, 2009 (price goes up $50.00 after this date) Conference Registration Location: www.ctaern.org High Schools That Work (HSTW) A reminder that the HSTW consolidated application deadline is May 15, 2009. HSTW grant application forms were emailed to all superintendents and CTAE directors on April 9, 2009. High Schools That Work (HSTW) is a research and data-driven school improvement initiative of the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) designed to assist high schools in improving the academic and technical performance and post-high school placement of secondary students. High Schools That Work activities involve the high school in efforts that replace low-level performance expectations with course rigor Page |2 and relevance and a school improvement initiative with a purpose. Schools wishing to become members of the HSTW network must take the HSTW Assessment, a NAPEbased assessment focusing on the whole school and HSTW's ten (10) Key Practices. Additional information may be found on the CTAE website under HSTW or at www.SREB.org. The 2008 HSTW Assessment follow-up survey is due May 29. Schools are asked to contact high school graduates who took the 2008 Assessment and encourage them to complete the on-line survey at www.sreb.org. Graduates will need the school HSTW Site Code and unique Assessment ID to be included in the results. HSTW Summer Staff Development The national HSTW Summer Staff Development Conference will be held July 8-11, 2009, at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. For additional information and to register on-line, go to www.SREB.org. Schools are encouraged to send a team to this very worthwhile conference. Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corp (JROTC) Thanks to all JROTC instructors completing the JROTC Program Survey. There were 155 respondents out of the 210 programs statewide. Complete results of the survey are available on the JROTC website at www.gadoe.org under Career Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE). As we have faced many challenges this year, our level of service has not diminished for CTAE students. Our Program Delivery team has planned a professional development active summer training program for your teachers. This will give them the opportunity to re-energize and advance their skills. Architecture, Construction, Communication and Transportation Sonny Cannon, gcannon@doe.k12.ga.us, (404) 657-8308 TIEGA The Trade and Industrial Educators of Georgia (TIEGA) is sponsoring ten competitors to the National SkillsUSA Conference by donating $10,000 to the SkillsUSA Youth Development Foundation. Your organization is also supporting the SkillsUSA Georgia VIP trip to the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in June. The VIP trip provides an opportunity for leaders in industry, government, and education to see the value of Career, Technical and Agricultural Education. CEFGA The Construction Education Foundation of Georgia (CEFGA) continues to support our programs around the state. CEFGA coordinates the workshop activities in partnership with the Georgia Department of Education and the CTAE Resource Network. Camp T&I will be held at Woodville Tompkins in Savannah the week of June 10-12 for the metals, HVAC, and Construction Technology programs. There will be "back to industry" and best practices sessions. The workshops for the AD&D programs will be held at Applied Software and taught by CEFGA and Applied Software staff. The workshops will be held the same week as the GACTE Conference Wednesday afternoon through Friday. These workshops will include GPS applications as well as updates on industry certification for the AD&D programs. NMEFGA The New Media Education Foundation of Georgia (NMEFGA) is sponsoring two video production competitions, one with a $500 prize for the winning video. See the www.nmefga.org website (under "BVP Teachers Home" menu) for complete details. Submission deadline is June 30 for both competitions. NMEFGA and its industry supporters will develop a certification/accreditation process for the BVP programs and will utilize the 80+ programs for the new CTAE News Network. PIAG The Printing and Imaging Association of Georgia (PIAG) has a full week of instruction planned this summer for graphic communications and design teachers. Dr. Don Armel from Georgia Southern will begin the week on July 21 with a session on 3D Images and Lenticular 3D effects. We'll then travel to Hewlett Packard's Digital Printing Solutions Center for a morning of hands on instruction creating and printing a simple variable data file. Wednesday afternoon starts Camp T&I at PIAG headquarters with teachers making their own paper. Thursday teachers join professionals from the printing and design industry for a full day session with Joe Marin, senior analyst, digital technologies for the Printing Industries of America. Joe's session discusses how graphic designers and printers can communicate more effectively to reduce delays, frustrations, and most importantly, cost. Paul Davis leads a CS4 software training session, giving away labs that can be used in the classroom. On Friday, Mamie Hanson from the Georgia Department of Education discusses program accreditation expectations and support. We'll finish up with a roundtable discussion on PrintED accreditation and the new graphic design competencies. Teachers who have been through the process will share their notebooks, curriculum, tips and tricks. Please join us for this full week of non-stop learning. TEFGA The Transportation Education Foundation of Georgia is providing two travel scholarships for SkillsUSA National competitors along with Southeast Toyota, Gulfstream, and Cessna Aircraft Company. TEFGA is working with business and industry partners to provide professional development opportunities at the 2009 GACTE Conference and Camp T&I. In the near future, TEFGA will be managing the NATEF certification process. TEFGA has a new executive director, Mike Nixon. Page |4 GACTE The Make-up Industry Certification Workshop will be held on July 22 from 1:00-5:00 p.m. (right after last session at GACTE). GACTE Sessions Our plans for the summer include some great GACTE sessions with topics such as: Technology in the Healthcare Classroom, Marketing your Healthcare afternoon (right after GACTE ends) and Thursday all day. More details will be available as soon as they are posted. Biotechnology Training Program, Moulage, TB, Sharing Best Practices, How Biotechnology training will be offered at Athens to Implement the HOSA National Community Service Tech and Gwinnett Tech this summer for anyone who Project Autism Speaks, as well as many more. We is interested in finding out more or anyone who might will have a special guest speaker and his mom at our potentially want to offer the biotech pathway. Although this sign up will not be through CTAERN, it will be posted so you can go there to download the agenda and the registration form. I have also sent out registration forms for these classes to all healthcare teachers. The forms and registration fee (some meals are included) will be sent directly to the program they will be attending. The Athens Tech program is a day longer (includes a day of industry tours), and the teacher can potentially earn 3 PLU's. Athens Tech dates are June 23-26 and July 710. Gwinnett Tech classes are June 9-11 for the introductory class and June 16-18 for the advanced class. Completion of the Gwinnett Tech sessions can result in the opportunity to earn 2 PLU's. HOSA National Conference The HOSA National Conference is June 24-27 at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee. This should be an exciting week for our students and advisors. Good luck to everyone who will be competing. Thanks for representing Georgia HOSA. HOSA Success Day HOSA Success Day will be Sunday, July 19th at the Waverly Hotel (GACTE hotel) from 10:00-4:30. Have your teachers check www.georgiahosa.org for information about registration (which is a separate registration from GACTE). All HOSA advisors are encouraged to attend as the yearly calendar and all events for the new school year will be discussed. Advisors will receive their handbook at this session. Cosmetology We are receiving tremendous support for our cosmetology programs from the business and industry community. We have had so many offers to assist with teacher training sessions this summer it is amazing. Cosmetology teachers have the chance to receive training from a national trainer, Ron Hawkins, all day Sunday, July 19 (registration day and beginning of GACTE that evening) from 8:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m.. We will continue our additional training Wed. afternoon (after GACTE ends) until 4:00 p.m. The additional training will include Esthetics microcurrent, Nexxus, and Nail Art. This additional pre and post training (both must be attended to potentially earn PLU) can result in an additional PLU being earned. Sign up for this pre and post training will be on www.ctaern.org along with additional information and necessary equipment to bring. Regular GACTE sessions will include a session on using technology in the cosmetology classroom, Paul Mitchell haircutting, and the Clic training system. The training is posted on the CTAE Resource Network. Through this training staff development will also take place at the GACTE State Conference held at the Cobb Galleria Centre, July 19-23. The Intervention support programs CCAE/PS/CTI are designed to: Assist in increasing graduation rates Increase academic performance Implement strategies to improve post school outcomes Earn Vocational Lab weight Utilize Carl D. Page |7 Agriculture Education The Georgia FFA Association held its 81st annual Convention on April 23-25, 2009, at the Centreplex in Macon. The theme of the Convention was Step Up & Stand Out, and more than 3,000 FFA members, advisors, sponsors and guests attended. As part of the Living to Serve portion of the Convention, more than 130 FFA members helped paint a house in downtown Macon, as part of a project with Rebuilding Macon. In addition, FFA members wrote hundreds of letters to U.S. Soldiers, and FFA chapters from across the state contributed nearly 4,000 cans of food as part of the FFA food drive. More than half of the food contributed was jars of peanut butter. Georgia FFA members answered a challenge from Governor Perdue to help spread the positive message of peanuts and their role in Georgia agriculture. The Convention officially began with the announcement of an 11th consecutive year of membership growth, as the Georgia FFA surpassed 29,000 members for the 2008-2009 year. At the Convention students were recognized with hundreds of awards for their supervised agricultural experience programs, and for their success in career development events. The Convention closed with a delegate business session and election of the new state officer team. The 2009-2010 State FFA Officers are President: Bo Corbett (Echols County), Secretary: Valerie Noles (Southeast Bulloch), and Vice-Presidents: Chandler Bartley (Murray County), Patrick Savelle (Oconee County), Kristy Baggarley (Crawford County), Chelsea Garner (Treutlen County), Holly Ward (Seminole County), and Keaton Griner (Colquitt County). FFA Summer Leadership Camp begins in May at the Georgia FFA/FCCLA Center, where more than 1,200 students are expected to participate. Also this summer 28 agricultural education students will participate in the Governor's Honors Program in the Agriscience and the Environmental Science programs. Nearly 40 Georgia FFA members will attend the Washington Leadership Conference on June 22-28, in our nation's capitol; and more than 500 FFA members are expected to participate in FFA Chapter Officer Leadership Training (COLT Conference) in July. As most of you are aware, our Program Manager for Agricultural Education, John Wilkinson, retired effective May 1. We are really going to miss John and everything he did for the students of Georgia.
