Page |1 CTAE NEWSLETTER January 2008 From James Woodard Director, Career, Technical & Agricultural Education From the desk of James Woodard Welcome to the 2008 year. We anticipate this year being one of the most productive years for Career, Technical and Agricultural Education. We should all be excited concerning the buzz about CTAE. Below you will find just a short list of important happenings related to Career, Technical and Agriculture Education. I encourage you to share this with all of your teachers and other partners. New Program Manager named for Program Delivery I am pleased to announce the promotion of Mr. Scott Carey as the new program manager for the program delivery team. Scott assumed this position on December 16, 2007 replacing Mr. Danny Fleming who retired a few months earlier. Scott brings extensive passion and experience to CTAE. He has served in numerous leadership roles both within education and industry. Please join me in congratulating Scott in his new role. Scott can be contacted at scarey@doe.k12.ga.us. Teacher Alternative Preparation Program Survey As we continue to seek ways to improve our delivery of professional development for new teachers entering into the CTAE teaching profession and for continued update training to retain experienced teachers, I would ask that you participate in the forth coming Georgia Teacher Alternative Preparation Program (Georgia TAPP) survey. The Georgia Professional Standards Commission is surveying the education community regarding the image and perception of the effectiveness of Georgia TAPP. The survey is being distributed to superintendents, principals and to CTAE Administrators to seek input and to access the impact of TAPP. Please take a few minutes and participate in the survey process. The CTAERN Board, along with the DOE are eagerly looking forward to the feedback and data that will be gained from this survey in regards to the awareness level and utilization of TAPP by CTAE. As you know, the DOE and the CTAERN are being asked to take on added responsibilities regarding new Perkins mandates, curriculum/standards development, assessment (end of course tests) and professional development mandates. Additional requests regarding funding to drive these initiatives are also being made for both state and federal funds. In this light, we must continue to look at expanding our utilization of programs such as TAPP to see how we can better fit into this model for the delivery of teacher preparation. In return we can increase our flexibility for allocating funds to maximize our training needs of CTAE professionals. ALF Conference The Winter CTAE Leadership Conference will be held February 10-12, 2008, at the Southern Pine Conference Center at Callaway Gardens. The purpose of this Conference is to connect ACCOUNTABILITY, school and system level LEADERSHIP and FUNDING (ALF) for the purpose of Program Improvement and increased student achievement. This will be one of many efforts to help build leadership capacity at the local level for the purpose of connecting Accountability, Leadership and Funding (ALF) to student achievement as it relates to both Perkins IV and No Child Left Behind. Our goal is to prepare CTAE Leaders for the positive changes anticipated from the Perkins IV legislation and to help CTAE Leaders meet the expectations for the successful implementation of the intentions of the law. Registration will be open from November 28, 2007 until January 10, 2008. Please register early. Go to www.CTAERN.org and register for workshop CTAE 8015. Call 800-225-5292 from 8:00 AM-10:00 PM to make your lodging reservations. Ask for the conference rate for "Winter CTAE Leadership Conference." The cut-off date for lodging reservations is January 10, 2008. After this date the block of rooms will be released. Page |2 Career Academy Training The Georgia Department of Education and the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education will be hosting a presentation related to Georgia's Career Academies Project on Tuesday, February 5. This presentation is scheduled to be held at the Rockdale Career Academy and will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude by 2 p.m. It is being sponsored by the Ford Partnership for Advanced Studies (Ford PAS) and the Georgia Apartment Industry Education Foundation (GAIEF). The Ford Partnership for Advanced Studies (Ford PAS) is an educational program to encourage high school students to pursue their education and build successful careers in business, engineering, and technology. It is "an academically rigorous, standards-based program that introduces students to the concepts and skills necessary for future success. The program links classroom learning with the challenges students will face in post-secondary education and with the expectations of the workplace they will face as adults." I think Ford PAS could be a valuable component of Georgia's Career Academies. More information will be forthcoming in the next week or so. From Program Development and Transition Team, Emily Spann, Program Manager Extended Day and Monthly Report Revisions to the Program of Work for 2008-09 are underway as well as a revamping of the website for entering activities on the Monthly Report. Two focus group discussions were conducted recently, one in Gwinnett County and the other in Bibb County. Seventy five people attended these meetings along with several Program Specialists and Managers from the GaDOE. Currently, input is being analyzed and a plan is being formulated for improvements to the website on the CTAE Resource Network. In addition, a manual is being written to assist local administrators with all the details and timelines for implementation of extended day. The goal for development of this manual is to have it available by the spring administrator drive-in meetings. Career Related Education C-NET was an issue discussed at the focus group meetings held in Gwinnett and Bibb counties. Development of a plan for improvements to C-NET is also underway as well as constant and on-going modifications as a response to user issues and concerns. Any issues with functionality of the current C-NET should be reported to the CTAERN hotline at 1-866-454-2823. All students enrolled in WBL placements regardless of the current delivery model or existing programs in your school should be entered into C-NET. We will begin pulling reports and looking at this data in January/February. Please be sure all WBL coordinators, co-op coordinators, and YAP coordinators have their C-NET data up to date and complete. Twenty one school systems are 2007-08 recipients of the CRE grant and serving as pilot test sites for the "one school-wide WBL coordinator" model. Very positive reports are emerging from these schools as they close in on semester one of implementation. School systems considering a move to this model may want to plan a visit to one of the schools nearby. Further information which will list contacts and details for planning such visits will be forthcoming in early January. The YAP grant assessments from 2006-07 have been analyzed and charts that compare system performance to state averages have been developed. A letter outlining the results of this analysis of the YAP program will be mailed to system directors in January. The YAP Assessment for the current 2007-08 school year will be sent out in February and will be due April 1, 2008. CTAE UBD/GSO CTAE Administrator Training The procedure and dates for the Understanding by Design (UBD) and Georgia Standards.Org (GSO) training for CTAE Directors/Supervisors/Administrators have been determined and are listed below. In order to identify the number of workshop representatives that may be sent from each school system, the following procedure will be used: 1. For every 300 CTAE FTEs that your system qualifies for this fiscal year (FY 2008), you may register one (1) designee to receive the training. The workshop representatives may be CTAE Directors, Administrators, Supervisors or designees for re-delivery. Page |3 2. If your school system only qualifies for one workshop representative, the system may send two people, but this is the only exception. 3. Please insure that each participant or designee has registered for the workshop on the CTAE Resource Network (www.ctaern.org), as this will ensure that we have materials and meals planned correctly. UBD (Understanding by Design) & GSO (Georgia Standards.Org) are the major focus areas for this level of training. Tools will be provided as resources for re-delivery of the training experience at the local level. Topics of the workshop will include: The Overall Plan Unpacking the Standards Essential Questions Enduring Understandings Differentiation Assessment Sequence of Instruction Teacher Commentary/Student Work GSO (Georgia Standards.Org) The complete Unit Builder The scheduled delivery dates for the CTAE Directors/Supervisors/Administrators training are listed below. The opportunities that are being provided by the teachers and leaders of our CTAE students are excellent. I now look forward to working as the Program Manager for the Program Delivery Team in providing needed support for our teachers and administrators. It is truly an exciting time for CTAE as we begin the New Year. If I or any member of my staff can be of service to you, please do not hesitate to let us know.
