' .. . ., ' . :...: ~ FOREWORD The gradual but steady improvement in facilities for Negro education in Georgia has been encouraging, even if not altogether satisfactory. The direction and development of this work has been under able and tactful supervisors supported by the General Education Board but responsible to the State Department of Education. These supervisors have administered financial help from several sources in such manner as to greatly promote wholesome Negro education and to win the approval and indorsement of the white citizens throughout the state. Supervisor Dixon and his predecessor in the prosecution of their work have commanded highest respect and hearty cooperation everywhere. These "Suggested Programs for Teachers' M eetings," carefully prepared by Supervisor ]. C. Dixon and Assistant Supervisor Robert L. Cousins, will immediately appeal to the interest of the Negro teachers and the approval of leading educators. They are highly commended for careful study and constant use by Negro teachers in all public schools of the state and are worthy of careful consideration by the profession generally. M. L. DUGGAN, State Superintendent of Schools. September 10, 1931. To THOSE INTERESTED IN NEGRO EDUCATION: A s we did last year, we have prepared for this year a suggested program for monthly teachers' meetings, beginning with October and going through the month of M arch. This program is suggestive only and is t o be modified to meet the demands of your local si t u a t io n . Last year the programs dealt with the vanous subjects included in the Course of Study for Elementary Schools. This year the programs will deal with such problems as classroom management, lesson plans, questions and questioning, and ethics for teachers. In addition to these, one ot two programs. will be offered on subjects which were not discussed in the teachers' meetings last yeat. The programs for the year are included in this issue of the items. This i!l..done in order that the-parts m;Uhe p~ogram ~ay be assigned not less, .than thre~ or four ~eeks before the tim~- of the meeting. This will give sufficient time for the teachers to prepare themselves ~ ). . thoroughly on the program, ana it should be the aim and ideal of each teacher to make a worthwhile contribution. The Superintendent has an excellent opportunity to contribute to the in-service training of his teachers, and at the same time to judge them and their ability. The programs are so arranged that the maximum time consumed will be from an hour and thirty minutes to an hour and forty-five minutes. This will depend upon the extent of the preparation of those who are on the _program. We will appreciate your checking these programs carefully, making such suggestions or criticisms as you may desire relative to them . GEORGIA STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION Division of J\l.egro Education SUGGESTED PROGRAM FOR TEACHERS' MEETING OCTOBER CLA.SSROOM MANAGEMENT These suggested programs call for a general discussion on topics affecting classroom ma~agement. Every teacher present should participate in the discussion, either by discussing some topic he or she feels like they have good ideas concerning, or by asking questions on points on which they would like to get new ideas. If the group is large enough to warrant it, there should be a division of the whole group into groups of those teaching in oneteacher schools, two-teacher schools, three-teacher schools, and larger. In this way those teachers with similar problems will be thrown together. Each group will select someone to direct the discussion. The discussion should be held t o the point under consideration, and an effort should be made to cover all the points suggested. One hour and thirty minutes should be devoted to group discussion. 1.
