SEPT. 2008 NEWSLETTER | Send to a Friend View All SPOTLIGHT ON: FISCAL 2008 Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue recently announced that in fiscal 2008, 321 economic development projects located or expanded in the state. The projects will bring 19,668 jobs and $3.26 billion in investment to the state. When compared with fiscal 2007 results, investment increased 17 percent, jobs increased 13.1 percent and announcements increased 14.2 percent. Major Kia supplier Powertech America will locate its first U.S. facility in West Point on the Kia pad site. Powertech, Georgia's ninth top tier Kia supplier, will manufacture automatic transmissions for Kia and Hyundai and plans to create 355 jobs and invest $150 million in the new facility. GDEcD designated its 129th and final Entrepreneur Friendly community in August. Johnson County became the last community to complete the program, which helps create an environment conducive to small businesses and entrepreneurs. The program, which is administered by GDEcD's Regional Small Business and Innovation team, began in 2004. View All Georgia welcomed 20 nations of the Americas to Atlanta during the second annual Americas Competitiveness Forum. High level officials from across the Western Hemisphere gathered to discuss topics such as trade logistics; travel and tourism; alliances in business and education; and renewable energy and sustainable resources. The Georgia Travel Guide won a coveted award at the 17th Annual GAMMA Awards, which celebrate editorial and design excellence in magazine publishing. The 216-page Travel Guide took home the Gold in the category of Best Single Issue (published 3 times a year or less), Consumer/Free. GDEcD's Innovation team will participate in the 2008 Georgia Life Sciences Summit, scheduled for September 24 at the Atlanta World Congress Center. This year's topic is Molecules, Materials & Minds ~ Building Georgia's INNOVATION Economy and will showcase the most advanced life science research and product development in biomedicine, agriculture, food nutrition and bioenergy.
