JULY 2008 NEWSLETTER | Send to a Friend View All SPOTLIGHT ON: BIO 2008 In June Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue led a delegation to the 2008 BIO International Convention, the world's preeminent showcase for biosciences, in San Diego. While there, Governor Perdue announced that the National Health Museum will locate in Atlanta. He also announced that two health-related companies, Dicon and DocuSys, have planned to locate in Georgia. In 2009, Atlanta will host the convention for the first time. Top-tier Kia supplier Glovis plans to locate in West Point, Ga. Glovis will create 600 jobs at its new logistics facility on the Kia site. Automotive supplier DongNam Tech announced plans to locate in Columbus. The company plans to create 350 jobs and invest $29 million in a facility to manufacture carpet and floor mats for several automakers in the Southeast. Georgia welcomed its first solar cell manufacturing facility as Suniva announced plans to create 100 jobs at a new plant in Norcross. View All Governor Perdue was host of the inaugural Southeastern United States-Canadian Provinces Alliance conference in Savannah June 15 17. Premier Jean Charest of Quebec was co-host. More than 270 delegates from six southeastern states and seven Canadian provinces converged on Savannah to attend workshops on strategic industries, tour key economic development sites and network. At the conference, Newfoundland and Labrador announced they will host the 2009 conference in St. Johns, with Governor Perdue as co-host. Six more counties have been designated Entrepreneur Friendly by the Georgia Department of Economic Development. Towns, Union, Butts, Walker, Lamar and Treutlen counties are the latest communities to create programs and services to become more welcoming to small businesses and entrepreneurs. The program will wrap up in August, with an estimated 130 Georgia counties expected to be designated.
