Week of June 6, 2011 Commissioner to Speak | PH Urban Radio | PH Move | Stay Cool | Kids Cyber Safe | Training Campaign | E-mail Signature Services for the Underserved: Commissioner To Address Georgia's Community Health Centers Reaching the underserved with critical health care services is inherent in the overriding mission of the Georgia Department of Community Health (DCH). And on Friday, June 10, Commissioner David Cook will meet with some of the state's front-line care providers when he addresses the Georgia Association of Primary Health Care (GAPHC). "Community health centers are the lifeline for many Georgians, especially in medically underserved rural and urban areas," said Cook. "All Georgia's citizens deserve access to primary and preventive care, and these centers are often their first and only resource to quality health care services." Read more Public Health Programs Hit Urban Radio During the next six months, a pair of Georgia Department of Community Health's (DCH) public health programs will receive strong play on powerhouse urban radio stations in Atlanta. Georgia's Maternal & Child Health (MCH) and Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (HPDP) programs are being actively promoted on Praise 102.5, HOT 107.9 and MAGIC 107.5 and 97.5 as part of a new partnership with the Radio One Broadcast Group. To launch the promotion, MCH's Brian Castrucci and HPDP's Shonta Chambers reached out to listeners through live in-studio interviews last week. But do you know where they are virtually how they're "connecting" and who or what they're connecting to? In our expansive Internet world with mobile devices of all kinds, it can be challenging for us when our children spend time in camps, visiting with friends or they're home alone all day and away from our direct supervision. How do we keep them safe in this virtual world that includes social networking, online gaming, blogging and X-rated sites? Fortunately, the same media that create cyber safety challenges can help us overcome them. Many cyber safety experts offer two pieces of advice for keeping our children safe in cyber space: first, we must be willing to learn about their world so that we can help them make good decisions about participating in it, and we must teach by example, modeling appropriate behavior ourselves. "It's our privilege to promote the health of Georgians in many important ways, and we are committed to conducting our business in an ethical manner and protecting the privacy of Georgians," said DCH Commissioner David Cook. "By training 100 percent of DCH's employees by the end of this fiscal year, we are assuring that we continue to fulfill our commitment to the public we serve."
