Your Numbers Georgia Medicaid Fair: Unqualified Success! Recently, more than 4,500 health care providers converged on the Georgia World Congress Center for the first semiannual Medicaid Fair. Sponsored by Department of Community Health (DCH), Hewlett-Packard (HP) Enterprise Services, and a number of other DCH business partners, this all-day event drew attendees from around the state. And, in the words of Bill L. L. Frazier, Provider Relations Field Services Supervisor, Georgia XIX Healthcare Account, it was "one for the books!" Read more TEAM UP: Cooking and Screening and More Olga Jimenez, BreasTest & More (BTM) State Public Education and Senior Manager with the American Cancer Society (ACS), was having just another day in the office when she received good news from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC had identified TEAM UP as one of the twelve practices that increases screening and improves follow-up for diagnostic services for breast and cervical cancer among low income, uninsured and underinsured, at-risk populations in the United States. TEAM UP started in 2004 as a collaborative pilot project among the American Cancer Society, South Atlantic Division, the Department of Community Health's (DCH) Georgia Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP) and the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension to increase breast and cervical cancer screening in high-mortality counties in Georgia. Georgia's TEAM UP project reviewed and adapted several evidence-based interventions to develop the "Cooking for a Life" Time Cancer Prevention Cooking School. Read more Dr. Fitzgerald to Introduce CDC Director Georgia's State Health Director Brenda Fitzgerald, M.D., will introduce Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Dr. Thomas Frieden at the CDC's "Winnable Battles" initiative meeting starting in Atlanta on Monday, June 6. The two-day meeting will bring together teams of legislators, public health officials and other stakeholders from around the country to create their own 12-month state action plans for the CDC's defined "Winnable Battles," including healthcare-associated infections, nutrition/physical activity/obesity/food safety, HIV, motor vehicle injuries, teen pregnancy and tobacco. Dewan McCarty, Regional Health Coordinator, and Maria Fontelle, Program Manager, Stroke and Heart Attack Prevention Program (SHAPP) were all smiles when they recently participated in the Know Your Numbers health screenings at 2 Peachtree. "It feels good to know that I'm doing the right things to stay healthy," said McCarthy. "Based on CIGNA's assessment, I have lost seven pounds (without trying to lose) since last year's health screening so my hard work is paying off." According to CIGNA, employee awareness and ownership are the keys to achieving and maintaining optimal health. Read more
