M E M O R A N D U M TO: Interested Persons FROM: Tony M. McClung DATE: May 29, 2003 SUBJECT: County Jail Report May 2003 Enclosed is the County Jail Inmate Information Report for May 2003. This report reflects the inmate population on Thursday, May 1, 2003. McIntosh County has now opened their new jail facility. Consequently, there are now 149 functional county jails providing inmate information. The data in this report represents 100 percent of the county jails reporting and 100 percent of the State's population. In May 2003, the county jail capacity increased by 53 beds to 34,450 as a result of McIntosh County opening their new facility and adding more beds to the jail. The number of inmates held in county jails increased by 884 inmates to 32,282. The number of inmates awaiting trial increased by 801 inmates to 19,147. This is the largest number of inmates ever housed in county jails and the largest number of inmates ever held in county jails awaiting trial. Meanwhile, the number of sentenced inmates awaiting transfer to State Institutions increased by 205 inmates to 4,132. The complete jail report is available on the web at: http://www.dca.state.ga.us/research/publicsafety.html TMM Enclosures SUMMARY COUNTY JAIL INMATE POPULATION REPORT1 May 1, 2003 ***************************************************************************************************************************************** 1. Since the purpose of this report is to count the total number of inmates housed in county jails, there are no provisions in this report to separately count the number of inmates sent to other facilities for housing. Rather, each county reports only on the number of inmates held in their facility on the first Thursday of the month. Inmates that are sent elsewhere for housing are counted by the facility housing those inmates.
