Public Safety Information Memorandum TO: Interested Persons FROM: Tony M. McClung DATE: July 19, 2000 SUBJECT: County Jail Report - July 2000 Enclosed is the County Jail Inmate Information Report for July 2000. This report reflects the inmate population on Thursday, July 6, 2000. In July, 148 of the 148 functional county jails provided inmate information. This represents 100 percent of the county jails reporting and 100 percent of the State's population. Please note that this represents no change from last month in the percentage of the counties reporting nor in the percentage of the State's population represented. Since January 2000, the county jail population has increased every month except April. In July, the number of inmates held in county jails increased by 387 to 28,685 inmates. This is the largest number of inmates held in county jails since December 1998. Meanwhile, the number of inmates awaiting trial (17,189) increased by 315. The number of county sentenced inmates increased by 17 for a total of 4,812. As a result of 306 additional beds being provided in Dooly, Fulton and Screven Counties, the total county jail capacity increased to 28,811. In addition to the Jail Report, another document has been added to the website to assist jurisdictions involved with planning and constructing new detention facilities. The "Jail Construction Checklist" may be of assistance to many jurisdictions. The "Checklist" is available at the same website as the jail reports. If you would like the jail report emailed to you rather than receiving a copy in the mail, please notify me by email at tmcclung@dca.state.ga.us. If you have any questions, please call me at 404-679-4797. /tmm Copyright 2000 Georgia Department of Community Affairs All Rights Reserved Use and display of the Seal of the State of Georgia is restricted by law, and may be used only with express written permission from the State of Georgia as authorized by the Governor. file:////bartleby/webdev/ExternalSites/development/Research/programs/downloads/jailReports/JailReport200007/Report7.00.html11/8/2005 9:26:28 AM Public Safety Information SUMMARY COUNTY JAIL INMATE POPULATION REPORT July 1, 2000 1. Since the purpose of this report is to count the total number of inmates housed in county jails, there are no provisions in this report to separately count the number of inmates sent to other facilities for housing. Rather, each county reports only on the number of inmates held in their facility on the first Tuesday of the month. Inmates that are sent elsewhere for housing are counted by the facility housing those inmates.
