Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date August 1, 2004 RAIN NEEDED Rain showers were mostly scattered throughout the week, according to the Georgia Agricultural Statistic Services. The moisture totals, though widely variable were especially helpful because many crops were showing signs of stress. Although the rainfall was welcomed, more rain is needed in the major producing areas for crops to reach their full potential. Overall, crop conditions were rated in mostly good to fair. Field operations were active in most areas all week except in the heavier rainfall locations. Pastures were sprayed and mowed. Cattlemen hope to get more hay cut. Farmers sprayed cotton and peanuts for insects. There were reports of pond and stream levels beginning to decline. Corn harvest was underway. Other activities included tobacco harvest, cutting and baling hay, and the routine care of livestock. County Extension Agents reported an average of 5.8 days suitable for fieldwork. District Highlights These comments are written by the Georgia County Extension Agents, and have been complied and edited by the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. DISTRICT COMMENTS August 1, 2004 DISTRICT 1 - NORTHWEST No comments available. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL Scattered thunderstorms produced heavy rainfall for part of this week. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST No comments available. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Rainfall widely variable. Stink bug pressure increased in cotton. Soil moisture critical in some areas. Putting in hay. Really need a rain this week. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Dry and hot! Some light spotted showers in the county but no rain of significance. Some hay producers still harvesting their first cutting of hay. Pasture and hayfield conditions declined due to the heat and drought. Water levels in ponds and streams are beginning to decline also. We have not received any significant rainfall over the past week. Rain everywhere in the state of Georgia, but our county, we are beyond dry! DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Spraying stink bugs in cotton. Corn harvest has begun. Irrigation switching from corn to cotton causing more mepiquat spraying on DP555. Very little disease pressure on peanuts. Some dryland cotton "cutting out." DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Foliage feeding caterpillars damaging peanuts. We received 1.48" of rainfall. Stink bug pressure increased in cotton. Widely variable amounts of rainfall. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL High heat and humidity. Stripping tobacco fields. Spraying early planted cotton fields for stinkbugs. Peanuts sprayed with fungicides and herbicides and foliar nutrients. Cutting and baling hay. Rain needed across the entire county. Portions of county in better shape than other areas. Many fields extremely stressed. Hot, dry weather and very little rainfall has slowed down crop progress. Cotton is progressing rapidly due to heat units. We need rain on dryland crops. DISTRICT 9 - SOUTHEAST No comments available.
