REPORT In the following pages will be found the results of analysis of a large number of samples of foods and drugs of a miscellaneous character which the inspectors have secured throughout the State Messrs C R Clark and J J Taylor made the examinations of the foods The drugs were analyzed by Mr J J Taylor COLORS IN FOOD Food Inspection Decision No 180 has been issued amending Decision No 175 by striking out from the list of the permitted dyes contained therein under Yellow shades the words 11 Sudan I and 16 Butter yellow Therefore the following list is automatically adopted as a guide in the enforcement of the Georgia Pood and Drug law This is an amendment to the list given on page 71 of Food and Drug Law Bulletin No 75 of the Georgia De partment of Agriculture Hereafter the coaltar dyes which may be used in food subject to the provisions of Food Inspection Decisions 76 117 and 129 shall be the following RED SHADES 107 Amaranth 56 Ponceau 3 R 517 Erythrosine ORANGE SHADE 85 Orange IHHHH i msM 4 MONTHLY BULLETIN YELLOW SHADES 4 Napthol yellow S 94 Tartrazine Yellow A B Benzeneazo B Naphthyla mine Yellow O B OrthoTolueneazo B Naph thylamine GREEN SHADE 435 Light green S P yellowish BLUE SHADE 692 Indigo disulfoacid The numbers preceding the names refer to the mem bers of the colors as listed in A G Greens edition of the SchultzJuhus Systematic Survey of the Organic Coloring Matters published in 1904 Sudan I and butter yellow have been found unsatis factory in practical use for food coloring purposes and these colors therefore are withdrawn from the list of those which may be certified for use in foods MARKING THE QUANTITY OF FOOD IN PACKAGE FORM Federal Food Inspection Decision No 179 has been issued amending Regulation No 29 which relates to mark ing the quantity of food in package form Paragraph j of Regulation No 29 of the Rules and Regulations for the enforcement of the Food and Drugs Act is hereby amended by staking out the words two avoirdupois ounces and inserting in lieu thereof onehalf avoirdupois ounce so that paragraph j as amended shall read as follows j A package containing onehalf avoirdupois ounce of food or less is small and shall be exempt from mark ing in terms of weight The above is automatically adopted by the Georgia Department of Agriculture and is an amendment to para graph j page 29 of Food and Drug Law Bulletin No POOD and FEEDINGST UFFS found to be in violation of the Food and Drugs Act of Georgia and the same was ordered condemned as being unfit for human consumption and in violation of the Act In some instances it is possible to conserve much of this condemned food by relabeling tagging and assorting of such as will do to be permitted to be sold while that found not to be fit for human consumption is either destroyed or put under bond by order of court for its sale and distribution In other instances where it is possible to conserve any wholesom e Food material the Department directs the same to be done The mere condemnation and withholding from sale of a lot of food products d oes not necessarily imply that the foods are unfit for human consump tion but the manner in which it is being
