As part of the Agricultural Resource Management Survey, USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service will gather data on farmers' chemical use, pest management and irrigation practices for corn and cotton. "Conducted every fall, ARMS serves as the primary source of information on the production practices, resource use and economic well-being of America's farm operations and farm households," said Doug Kleweno, director of the Georgia NASS Field Office. "The survey results help agricultural leaders and decisionmakers better understand how producers cope with risk, adapt to policy changes, and make decisions about chemical use, new technologies, and many other aspects of farming." This year, ARMS will focus on corn and cotton in Georgia. This will be the first time since 2005 that ARMS has focused on corn vroduction and the first time ever that it has looked at organic corn production. Farms hold a central role in the heritage of our state, having formed the economic, cultural, and family foundation for generations of Georgians. Each year, farms continuously operating for over 100 years are recognized by the Georgia Centennial Farm Program. The 2010 Georgia Centennial Farm Awards will be held on Friday, October 8, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Centennial Farm Award does not require continual family ownership, but farms must be at least 100 years old or more and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Answer: No. Because this beautiful yellow wildflower is often in bloom at the same time as ragweed (a plant with inconspicuous green flowers which do cause hayfever), the showy goldenrod unfairly gets the blame. Many species of goldenrod are superb garden perennials because of their beauty and durability. Goldenrods are also attractive to butterflies and are excellent cut flowers. There are numerous species of goldenrod native to Georgia. Some of these species or varieties of them may be found for sale (Continued on Page 12) 2010, at the Georgia National Fair in Perry, Georgia. The ceremony will begin with a luncheon followed by the awards presentation. This year's keynote speaker is Senator John Bulloch, Chairman of the Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Committee and Vice Chair of the Natural Resources and the Environment Committee. Recognition is given to the farm owners through one of three distinguished awards. The Centennial Heritage Farm Award honors farms owned by members of the same family for 100 years or more Centennial Family Farm Award recognizes farms owned by members of the same family for 100 years or more that are not listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
