GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN, COMMISSIONER ~ o 1 . HNo~. 14 Fall' arm land Edition Set For September 8 The Fall Farmland Edition of the Market Bulletin will be published Sept. 8, 2010; deadline for this issue is August 18, 2010. Please adhere to the following guidelines when submitting farmland advertisements for the farmland edition. * Only farmland may be advertised. Land tracts must be at least five acres in size and located in Georgia. * Indicate acreage and county where your property is located. * All property must be for sale by owner; no real estate brokers or agents are allowed to advertise; property under contract with a real estate agent or broker is not eligible for advertising. Consumers are encouraged to call the Market Bulletin office toll-free 1-800-282-5852, to report ads not in compliance with this requirement. * Descriptive terms should be limited to those characterizing farm property or agricultural structures, such as barns, stables, etc.; descriptive terms, such as square footage of homes, number of bedrooms, bathrooms, etc., will not be included for non-agricultural structures. (Continued on Page 12) Notice Ad Deadline for the August 11 issue is noon, July 28 -2 a Y .aa0- 2 0 dN Wednesday, July 14, 2010 ... ag consumer line Does the cow-itch vine make cows itch? As far as we know, the cow-itch vine (Campsis radicans), also known as "trumpet creeper" or "trumpet vine," does not cause cattle any dermal discomfort. The name "cowitch" is a corruption of "cowhage," the name of a tropical vine in the bean family that has pods that do indeed cause itching of people and perhaps cows as well. The bean-like seed pods of our native cow-itch vine must have reminded some early settler or explorer of the cowhage vine. The fact that cow-itch vine often grows on pasture fence posts where cows rub or scratch may have contributed to the etymological evolution of "cowhage" into "cow-itch." Some people have claimed allergic reactions when sawing or cutting the stems of our cow-itch vine, but this is not universal or well documented. Cow-itch vine is sold at garden centers and nurseries, but usually under the more marketable names of trumpet creeper or trumpet vine. The vine's tubular, orange-red flowers attract hummingbirds. The variety 'Flava' has orange-yellow flowers and can sometimes be found for sale. 'Madame Galen' is a hybrid between our native species and the Chinese species Campsis grandiflora and is commonly available for sale. Cow-itch vineltrumpet creeperltrumpet vine is a durable, vigorous vine. One drawback in the garden is that it may be too vigorous as it suckers and spreads readily. What is the difference between a defoliant and a herbicide? A defoliant is used to make leaves (foliage) fall off of a plant. Defoliants have a very specialized use in agriculture. A defoliant may be used at the end of the season on cotton or soybeans or other crops to make harvesting easier. A herbicide is used to kill unwanted plants (weeds) or prevent them from sprouting. Home gardeners may feel the need to use a herbicide to kill weeds. They would not use a defoliant. What section of the Georgia Department of Agriculture issues permits for restaurants and inspects them? Please contact your county health department. They inspect and license food service establishments such as restaurants. If you have questions about services or products regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, visit our website at www.agr.georgia.gov or write us at 19 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Room 227, Atlanta, GA 30334 or e-mail us at info@agr.georgia.gov. @Copyright2010 / Notice to Subscribers I Since Market Bulletin subscriptions are now $10 per year for Georgia subscribers, expiration dates for subscriptions will be recalculated from the current three-year cycle to a one-year cycle. Peaches to Provide Flavor, Variety to Summer Foods Georgia's peach harvest now is in full swing with harvest continuing until about mid-August. Although Georgia is no longer the nation's largest producer of peaches, the state still is known as "The Peach State." Peaches contain many important nutrients, such as vitamin A in the form of beta carotene. The fruit also contains riboflavin and is a good source of fiber. In addition, peaches are one of the lowest-calorie fruits, with virtually no fat, sodium or cholesterol. Summer Equine Issue See pages 6 & 7 Georgia produces more than 40 commercial varieties of peaches, which are divided into two general categories: freestone and clingstone. The fruit of a freestone peach readily breaks away from the stone or pit, whereas the clingstone fruit adheres to the pit. Nutrient Analysis Serving size Calories Protein Carbohydrate Fat Cholesterol Sodium Dietary fiber 1 medium peach 40 0.6 g 10 g 0g 0 mg 0 mg 1.5 g Selecting and Using Peaches When selecting peaches, smell the fruit. The peach is a member of the rose family and should have a pleasingly sweet fragrance. Look for a creamy gold to yellow under color. The red or "blush" of a peach is indicative of the variety, not the ripeness of the fruit. Peaches should be soft to the touch but not mushy, and the fruit should have a well-defined crease that runs from the stem to the bottom point. Don't squeeze the fruit because it bruises easily. Firm peaches can be placed on a counter top for a day or two to ripen. Promptly refrigerate ripe peaches and eat them within a week of purchase. To peel a peach, dip it in boiling water for 30 seconds; then place it in cold water. The peel then should slide off easily. Add lemon juice or ascorbic acid to sliced peaches to keep them from darkening. Peaches can be enjoyed freshly picked as a sweet snack.
