Box 119, Commerce, GA 30529; www.urbanagcouncil.com for both indoor and outdoor water use and conservation. Outdoor landscape water use is now allowed every day of the week, except for a six hour period during the heat of the day. This will boost consumer confidence that landscapes can be irrigated and will hopefully lead to more purchases of landscape plant materials. On my next trip, to a large supermarket this time, I thought I would be better prepared by bringing my backpack. It turned out that I was hungrier than I thought, and my substantial haul would not fit into my book bag. To carry everything, I bought a large reusable bag. For my next trip to the grocery store, I will finally be prepared with my own bag. I am quickly becoming a local, but will continue to notice the differences and similarities between my temporary home and Georgia. Until next time, happy grocery shopping from Brussels! Matt DeMatteo Louisville 706-410-4570 Wednesday, June 30, 2010 THE MARKET BULLETIN Anaerobic Digester on Dairy Farm Powers Approximately 50 Homes Page 11 Orange Bulldog USDA Rural Development invested $200,060 in 2005 to help Pete Wright of Wright, Whitty, Davis Farms, Inc., build the first anaerobic digester in several years for dairy waste in the state of Georgia. In 2009, the digester produced over 137 kilowatts per hour, enough to power approximately 50 homes for a year. The dairy sells excess energy not used on the farm to Satilla EMC and could bring in over $5,000 a month when operating at peak efficiency. The farm also saves more than $ 100,000 a year they were paying for sawdust bedding for 1,200 cows. The dry manure product that comes out of the digester has many properties that makes it ideal for bedding material. In addition, the digester has eliminated higher than acceptable nitrogen levels in the farm's wells. "Plants are able to take up more nitrogen, with less getting into the ground water and streams," said Craig Scroggs, coordinator of the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) for USDA Rural Development in Georgia. "They are pleased with the operation of the digester and have had discussions about building another one." An anaerobic digester is expensive initially, but USDA Rural Development can provide a grant for 25% of eligible project costs, up to a maximum of $500,000, in addition to loans of up to $25,000,000. "This project puts manure to work," said Shirley Sherrod, state director of USDA Rural Development. "It transforms waste into clean energy, creates a revenue stream for farmers, and eliminates some ongoing expenses. It will pay for itself over time. It's good for the environment and good for producers." The dairy waste treatment system converts cow manure into a non-odorous liquid for crop application, a separated solids portion for bedding on the dairy, and a biogas stream for fuel in a reciprocating engine to produce electricity. Fiscal Year 2005 was the first year USDA Rural Development funded renewable energy projects. With passage of the 2008 Farm Bill, however, the program has exploded. In Georgia, Rural Development has funded 96 projects and one energy audit totaling over $14 million in the past two years. Projects for FY 2010 are currently being processed and a record number of applications have been received. "This year has proven to be our busiest ever and we expect interest in the program to continue to grow both for renewable energy production and energy efficiency improvements," Scroggs said. Funds are provided through Rural Development's Renewable Energy Grant Program. Eligible projects derive energy from a wind, solar, biomass, or geothermal source. More information about the Renewable Energy program can be found at www.rurdev.usda.gov/gayenergy.htm or by contacting Craig Scroggs at 404-229-5720 (craig.scroggs@ga.usda.gov) or Al Bums at 229-220-5067 (al .bums@ga.usda.gov). The primary objective of these BMPs is to reduce landscape water use -- not just during periods of drought, but throughout the entire growing season. Water conservation is an improvement in water use efficiency, not the temporary responses to periodic drought. BMPs are designed to be economical, practical, and sustainable while maintaining a healthy, functional landscape -- a landscape that capitalizes on the environmental benefits of plant systems. A two- to four-inch layer of organic matter will help the soil retain moisture, lower the temperature, and prevent the surface from compacting and crusting. Pine straw, spoiled hay, peanut hulls, pecan shells, and shredded pine bark all make good mulch materials. Most of the fertilizer you applied to your perennials, vegetables, and shrubs in the spring has either been used by the plants or washed away by now; therefore, apply a midsummer application of about cup 5-10-10 or similar analysis fertilizer per square yard. Then water the nutrients into the soil and rinse off any granules that may be in contact with the plant foliage. However, there is another variety of red bottlebrush known as `Woodlanders Hardy' that is fully hardy in Atlanta and even farther north. It is also durable, drought-tolerant and easy to grow. Its flowers may not be quite as large as Callistemon citrinus, but it is still a show-stopper when in bloom and an attractive shrub when out of bloom. We have reports of two other bottlebrushes that may be hardy enough to try in Atlanta and other parts of Georgia: the red `Clemson' bottlebrush (Callistemon rigidus `Clemson') and a pink-flowering hybrid of Callistemon paludosa. *** My `Moon and Stars' watermelon plants are spotted yellow. What is wrong? Nothing is wrong. The foliage of this old-fashioned watermelon is naturally speckled with yellow. The fruit is also speckled. `Moon and Stars' gets its name because the rind has a large yellow spot (moon) and numerous small yellow spots (stars). The flesh is not speckled. There are red and yellow-fleshed strains of `Moon and Stars.' The yellow-fleshed strain is not quite as sweet as the red strain. Commissioner Urges Horse Owners to Take Extra Precautions During Summer Heat With temperatures higher than normal for early summer. Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin is cautioning horse owners to be sure that their animals do not become victims of the heat. During the summer, measures always should be taken to ensure that horses stay cool and healthy; however, extreme temperatures call for more careful attention to a horse's condition. Tips for helping horses beat the heat: Work and exercise should be minimal during the hottest part of the day. Limit activity to morning and evening hours. Leave barn doors open as often as possible to allow proper ventilation. Place large fans around the exercise area, being sure to keep cords out reach of horses. Loosen or remove saddles and harnesses. Be cautious when allowing horses to walk on concrete; bare feet can be burned and horseshoes can become extremely hot. When hosing horses down after exercise, start with the legs and work upward to avoid shock. Work horses should be given regular breaks in a cool environment with plenty of shade, water and cool ground. Some horses may require extra electrolytes, which can be given through store-bought supplements or by a mixture of 3 parts salt (sodium chloride) and one part lite salt (potassium chloride). Older and overweight horses have a harder time dealing with heat. Horses that are exposed to extreme temperatures for long periods of time can experience heat stress or heat strokes. Excessive sweating, panting, rapid breathing, rapid heart rate and high rectal temperature are all signs of heat stress and should be treated by running cool water on the horse's legs and giving frequent, small amounts of water. These signs also can be an indication of a heat stroke, in which case a veterinarian should be called immediately. While waiting for a vet to arrive, the same treatment methods for heat stress should be administered to the horse. Horses always should be given access to cool water and shade throughout the day during the summer. If the combined temperature and humidity of the air is over 150 0 F., owners and caretakers should take extra caution. Make sure that water given to horses remains cool, and is not heated from the sun. It also should be noted that in extreme heat a horse can drink more than 20 gallons of water a day. "I am encouraging all horse owners to take the necessary precautions to ensure that their horses stay cool and healthy throughout the summer," says Commissioner Irvin. "With temperatures as high as they have been lately, it's better to not take any chances." Aphid transmitted viruses can be devastating on this crop and often can result in complete crop failure. Even with an aggressive program to control aphids, it can be impossible to control these diseases. Because aphid transmitted viruses can be spread so quickly, just a few insects can quickly devastate the crop. The University of Georgia has released a new pumpkin/winter squash named `Orange Bulldog.' This pumpkin has been developed from germplasm collected from South America with greater levels of resistance to viruses than conventional pumpkins. In tests in south Georgia, it consistently has produced greater yields than conventional pumpkins it was tested against in fall production. In many cases the conventional pumpkins produced no fruit because the plants were killed by viruses before flowering while `Orange Bulldog' produced 13,000 to 20.000 pounds per acre. The fruit average about 10 pounds with a distinct suture and most are suitable for carving, having an open internal cavity. Color ranges from salmon to burnt orange. Size and shape are irregular, but the fruit have sold well in market trials in Georgia and Alabama. The fruit are yellow when immature and can be harvested at this stage and cooked like summer squash. The fruit also can be cooked and pureed into a pumpkin pie filling and baked like butternut squash, producing excellent pies and vegetable dishes. `Orange Bulldog' gives growers a new variety that will produce more consistently during high virus pressure as occurs in the fall. The vines hold up particularly well and also have tolerance to both powdery mildew and downy mildew. This variety should have a particularly good fit for roadside marketers and pick-your-own operations where good vine cover is crucial. For best results growers should follow their Extension Service recommendations for production. This should include adequate fertilization and water. In addition, a good fungicide program will increase vine production and regular scouting for insects should be done. Certain insects, such as whiteflies, can be problematic in the fall in our region and control measures should be instituted promptly if they are present. Organically produced `Orange Bulldog' seed are available to those growers wishing to use untreated organic seed. The seed is being made available at no additional cost. Pumpkin production in south Georgia has been highly restricted with inconsistent (Continued on Page 11) Wednesday, June 30, 2010 Pick Your Own (Continued from Page 1) all signs and follow directions to know where and what to pick. Picking fields or orchards may be located a distance from the parking area. If this poses a problem for you or one of your party, contact the farm in advance and inquire if it provides transportation to and from the picking areas. Some farms have more accommodations than others, so inquire about the availability of drinking water, rest room facilities and rest areas before making the trip to the farm. Also call ahead to confirm the availability of crops and obtain directions to the farm and any other information you may need. Holiday Closing Notice The Ga.
