Ag Awareness (Continued from Page 1) Agribusiness and Economic Development, along with partners and sponsors, the Governor's Agricultural Advisory Commission, Georgia Agribusiness Council, Georgia Rural Development Council, and the UGA Department of Food Science and Technology. and Economic Development, Rural Arts and Culture, and Rural Community and Social Affairs. Graduates of the program might find careers with private sector organizations that deal with rural issues, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. Other possibilities include historic preservation, rural history, rural sociology, global studies, journalism, or public administration. We have had a lot of folks comment on the new degree already. I really like what Trisha Yearwood had to say. She's a native Georgian, and her late father, Jack, was an ABAC alumnus. "I am delighted to hear about the Rural Studies program that ABAC has started, especially the art and culture courses," Yearwood said. "This program gives me one more reason to love ABAC." Senator Saxby Chambliss is from nearby Moultrie, and he has spoken at ABAC many times. He likes the leadership potential of Rural Studies. "ABAC has a strong tradition of developing its students into community leaders," Chambliss said. "With the introduction of the Rural Studies degree program, ABAC is further encouraging the FFA-FCCLA Center to Host Wildlife Camps Young boys and girls can safely leam shooting sports, fishing, canoeing, wildlife conservation, and deer stand safety and construction at the FFA Wildlife Camp at the Georgia FFA-FCCLA Center south of Covington. Basic Wildlife Camp is an outdoor adventure camp held June 21-26 and June 28-July 3 for boys and girls ages 10-15. The cost is $300 per camper, including lodging in cabins for five nights, all meals, instruction, recreation, and a tshirt. In addition to daily hands-on classes, students participate in recreational activities, such as swimming and miniature golf. The week of camp is centered on firearm and hunter safety. Upon completion of the week, students will receive Georgia Hunter Safety Certification and a Certificate of Completion. All firearm training is performed by Certified Georgia Hunter Education Instructors. Advanced Camp is July 5-10 and July 12-17 for boys and girls ages 11-16 who already have received their hunter safety certification. Activities during the Advanced Camp include shooting 3-D targets, outdoor survival, wildlife instruction, deer stand safety, and fishing. All programs are hands-on and will be adapted to the age of the students. The focus of the program is to increase safety, awareness, and appreciation of wildlife and outdoor sports to young boys and girls. According to center director Todd Teasley, "Many of today's students need to be taught the importance of wildlife management and the roll that outdoor sports play in preserving the health of (Continued on Page 10) ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit of its students to ensure that our rural communities remain competitive." ABAC is on the move. With the addition of Rural Studies, seven bachelor's degrees in their entirety are now available on the ABAC campus including Diversified Agriculture, Turfgrass and Golf Course Management, Resource Management, Accounting, Management, and Early Childhood Education. For more information, you can visit the ABAC web site at www.abac.edu/ ruralstudies or call (229) 391-4782. Check out Rural Studies at ABAC. I think you will like what you see.
