No. 9 Wednesday, April 25, 2007 Copyright 2007 Ga. Ag Dept. Oversees Training of Certified Pesticide Applicators Association Advances Pest Control Industry As I journey through life one of the lessons I have learned is that I am not a "do-it-yourseJfer." Every time I try to fix something myself, it winds up costing me more money. If you are wondering where l am going with this, it is that if you havea pest control problem in your home or business, call a Pest Management . Professional (PMP). The application of pesticides, especially if you have a chronic pest problem, should be done by~ trained and licensed PMP. The Georgia Pest Control A~sociation is one of the leading state pest control associations in the country. We offer hundreds of hours of training modules, career development programs and an assortment .of programs and services for PMP's from around the state. We have successfully lobbied both State and federal legislators to continue funding research for Our guest colunmist this week is Tom Buchanan, president, Georgia Pesr Control Association, 2034 Beaver Ruin Road, Norcross, GA '30071. eradicating Fonnosan termites in the State of Georgia. These voracious eaters have been described by 1 UGA researcher Dr. Brian Forschler this way: " Subterranean tennites are like an elephant eating your home, but a Formosan termite is like a dinosaur eating lunch." You get the picture. The Georgia Pest Control Association continues to update both the PMP and the consumers of Georgia on the latest trends and technologies in our industry. This (Continued on Page 14) Dept. Offers New Cookbook See page 16 Georgia's private and commercial pesticide applicators must participate in periodic training classes in order to maintain_ their certification. The speakers and topics for these training sessions are pre-approved by the Pesticide Section of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, .which also assigns the appropriate number of credit hours for the courses. Depending on the lype of license held, the nearly 30 ,000 certified pesticide applicators in the state must earn from three to 10 hours of. recertification credit during their licen.se period. More than 600 opportunities for pesticide recertification credit are offered by the University of Georgia and private sponsors each year. These clac;ses offer information on cutting edge technology, such as the introduction of new pest management products . and innovative appJication techniques, and provide applicators an opportunity to brush up on safe and proper pesticide handling procedures that have been standard practice for many years. At the aerial fly-in clinics, aircraft equipment is tested and calibrated to insure proper oper?tion. In the photo above, participants are collecting data on wind speed and pesticide application pattern. To check the plane's spray pattern, a "string" is stretched across the r unway to collect dye sprayed from the aircraft. The sample is then analyzed and adjustments'are made if needed to the spray equipment to insure uniform application of pesticides. Ga. EPD Declares Level Two Drought Statewide The director of the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) has declared a level two drought response across the state and will require all Georgians to follow a more stringent outdoor water use schedule. "Every area of Georgia has been in a persistent and progressive drought condition since last June," said EPD Director Carol A. Couch. "It's important that we take steps now to prepare for the warm, typically dry summer months." The drought declaiation was made following a meeting April 18 of the State Drought" Response Committee. The Committee includes representatives f(om several state, federal.and local agencies, as well as universities and non-government organizations. The EPD Director, working with State Climatologist David Stooksbury, consults with the Committee members and then determines wh.ether a drought response declaration is appropriate. " March was very dry, and it's historically a very wet month in Georgia," said State Climatologist Stooksbury. "That's one of the reasons we're in trouble now." Tue level two drought was declared for aU of Georgia. EPD Director Coucb said drought conditions will continue to be monitored and she will confer with the Drought Response Committee again in a month. Revised drought response declarations will be issued as necessary. A level two drought response declaration limits outdoor water use to (Contumed on Page 14) ag consumer line My pest control company has treated my home for termites twice in the last ~ear. Now, I have termites again. Should I withhold my annual renewal fee until they resolve this situation? No. A termite contract is like an insurance policy for your home. If you do not pay the renewal fee, your coverage will lapse and your home will not be covered under the terms and conditions of the contract.
