Winners of the Department's 2007 Agriculture Day Contest. as well as those receiving honorable mention, and their guests, were invited to the department's headquarters in Atlanta where they were served breakfast before proceeding to the ceremooy. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin welcomed the attendees at the Capitol and was joined by Governor Sonny Perdue, who signed a proclamation declaring March"15 as Agriculture Day in Georgia. The Commissioner. along with Logan Scott, Teen Ms. Georgia Agriculture, also presented cash awards, medals and certificates to the contest essay and art winners and certificates and medals to those receiving honorable mention for their entries. The theme for this year's contest was "Agriculture - for a Secure Future:' The contest had written and visual an categories. The written category was open to students in grades 4 - 8 and grades 9 12; the visual art category was open to students in grades K-12. First. second and third place winners in the categories received cash prizes of$200,$100 and $50. respectively. ..Many of our young people t0day have little or no exposure to agriculture, and we arc pleased that we can offer this contest as a way to get them thinking about our state's most important industry," Irvin said. "We would like to congratulate our winners and honorable mentions and to thank all those who participated:' Governor Announces Award Winner For Environmental Stewardship During the Georgia Oeparlment of Agriculture's annual Agriculture Day obser vance at the State Capitol, Governor Sonny Perdue signed and presented a proclamation to Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin proclaiming March 15 as Agriculture Day in Georgia for 2007. The 2007 winner of the Governor's Environmental Stewardship Award is Greenview Farms Inc. in Wayne County. Greenview Farms was selected from five district winners including Longview Cattle Farm , Senoia; Cabe Brother 's Farm , Carnesville; Waller Farm. Harrison; and Don Register Farm, Chula. Created in 2006 by the environmental stewardship subcommittee of the Governor's Agriculture Advisory Committee, the award program honor farmers for good stewardship of all aspects of the environment in their fanning practices.
