Although you will pay a little more forhighqualily plants, your investment will pay off as the higher-quality ones will provide more roses and plant growth in the future . Number one rose plants have three to five heavy canes about 18 inches long while number one-and-one-half and number two grades will have only two canes about 12 to 15 inches long. Regardless of how much you spend on your rose bushes, remember that they will produce well only if you provide them with proper care. If fruit and shade trees have diseased and broken limbs, prune them this month while the trees still are dormant. Dogwoods may be planted in February to insure a good growth response. When planting, select a well-drained location and do not plant too deeply. Mulch around the tree to help maintain moisture during dry periods. ff the foliage on liriope has noticeable cold damage and is unsightly, prune it back now. Early February is the time to complete all transplanting of trees and overgrown shrub . Remove at least one-fourth of the top growth at transplanting time to help the plants overcome transplanting shock. Now is a good time to cultivate your garden area and add fertilizer or lime if needed to enable time to work its way into the soil before spring p.lanting. February is an ideal time to plant leafy vegetables, such as spinach , turnip, mustard, collards and cabbage. Farm Front (Continued from Page I) recipients return the fonn.
