"We, the farmers of this state, have faith that God will send us all the rain we need. We have faith when we put seeds in the soil," Duvall told the group of about 250 gathered for the service. "We're here today to obey our L ord and Savior. The Bible tells us when we humb ly coine before God, repent of our sins, and petition him that he will answer our prayers, and we.believe he wiJJ in his time.'' Duvall cited the scripture, Job 5:6-10, during his remarks. Gov. Perdue presented Duvall with a proclamation declaring June 11 as a Day of Prayer for Agriculture in Georgia. " God has a reason he wants us to be dependant on him . We can create governme nt programs. We can create irrigation and driII wells , but I' m here to tell you as your governor, were still de pendent on a graceful and merciful God , and only God caD make it rain." "I believe it's the driest I can ever recall in my lifetime," Irvin said . I don't believe we've ever had as acute a shortage of feed for our livestock as we have today. 1 get phone calls every day asking 'What are you going to do about the drought?' I've asked our congressional delegation, and I know the governor bas supported this also, to get a feed assistance program enacted, but that doesn't take away from the fact that we still need rain." The CornQlissioner also noted that when people pray lhey must remember the Lord answers prayer in his own good time. not on man's timetable. ln an interview wilh media after the service, G ov. On April 18. 2207, the State of Georgia was declared to be in a level two dro ught res ponse, and this initiative will help offer ways for homeowners to ' beat the drought' affecting the state . A level two drought limits outdoor water usage from midnight to 10 a .m. on designated days of the week. "The watcrS mart program he lps everyone understand how to conserve water, and the importance of conservation as - warmer weather and dry conditions spread across Georgia this summer," said Carol A. Couch, Director of the Georgia Environmental Protection D ivision. " However, waterSmarl also prov ides water-saving information during periods of normal rainfall to help citizens conserve water and lower utility bills year-round." The state waterSmart program will include a statewide education campaign throughout spring and summer to help all Georgians leam more about outdoor water conservation through a variety of topics from spring planting tips to information on irrigation systems. By raising awareness among consumers about water conservation, the education program aims to establish subtle habit changes among Georgians that will help them save water, money and their landscaping. ln addition to statewide o utreach, waterSmart also will place special emphasis on six pilot communities across the state, including Albany, Augusta, Cobb County, Columbus, Dalton and Macon. These cities have been selected to implement a larger scaled program , which includes homeowner seminars as well as water conservation curriculum for classrooms. With support from commun ity pa1tners, such as local water providers, extension agents, nature centers, and environmental education specialists, waterSmart will be implemented and customized to reach out tO residents in each comm un ity. These additional resources were developed by the Education.Roundtable , a partnership of organizations working together to develop coordinated environmental messages for Georgians created by DNR Commissioner Noe] Holcomb. T he Education Roundtablc partners wiJl support the waterSmart programs and the six targeted pilo t communities to encourage water conservation re lated to outdoor usage. 'My vision for the waterSmart initiative is to rally community partners to de liver a SAVE WATER SAVE TIM6 SAVE MONEY ' high-quality education and outreach program about water conservation with a unified message," Holcomb said. ..We hope that Georgians will hear the tips on how to reduce their outdoor water uses from many different sources in theix community and take it to heart in their habits at home." The DNR and Lhe Education Roundtable have teamed up with wate rSmart to offer simple, state-ofscience tips for maintaining healthy lawns while using less water: Don't water your law n too frequently Generally, to remain healthy an established lawn needs about one inch of water every seven-to-ten days . Soak, don't sprinkle. When you water , aim the nozzle at the base of plants so more water will reach the roots. Tum off your automatic irrigation system when it rains - or better yet - use an automatic time controller and attach a rainfall sensor to turn off the irrigation syste m if significant rainfall occu1Ted . Don't water in the heat of the day. Water in Lhe early morning hours (4 a.m. -10 a.m .) to prevent evaporation. Using pine straw. bark chips or ground hard.wood mulch on the roots of plants and trees helps the soil retain water and (Continued on Page 11) of bus iness (4:30 p.m.) on July 18.
