The drought has become extreme across the nortJ1 Georgia counties of Bartow, Carroll. Since early May, extreme drought conditions expanded into the south Georgia counties of Ben Hill. On May 25 Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin sent letters to U.S. Senators Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss urging their assistance with implementing a feed assistance program to meet the immediate needs of Georgia's farmers. In his letters lrvin noted that hay has become very scarce and expen ive throughout the state, and fuel costs have pushed the price of hay even higher. In a scatement reJeased to the press May 30, Georgia EnvironmentaJ Protection Division Director Carol Couch assured farmers that EPD does not intend to curtail agricuJtural irrigation due to the ongoing drought. "Crops are in the ground and a state-imposed reduction in irrigation at this time wouJd be deva-;tating to the region's farm-based economy," Couch said. "Our farmers must be able to irrigate during this drought period," said lrvin. (Continued on Page 11 ) Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin recently received a plaque from Georgia Department of Natural Resources Board Chairman Jim Walters (right) and David Forster, Director of DNR's Wildlife Resources Division (center) recognizing the Department ofAgriculture's support of the Georgia Hunters for the Hungry Program through which deer, donated by hunters, become nutritious venison to benefit those in need. As much of the tate continues is a tate of cx1:remc or severe drought. ii is important 1ha1 all Georgians use water resources wisely. There are many ways all Georgians can conserve water each day. Following arc just a few suggestion from the Water Use It Wisely campaign: When wa hing dishes by hand, don't let the water run while rinsing. Fill one ink with wash water and the other with rinse water. Run your washing machine and dishwac:her only when they are full and you could save 1000 gallons a month Use the garbage disposal sparingly. Compost instead and save gallons every time. Use a layer of organic mulch around plants to reduce evaporation and ave hundreds of gallons of water a year. Use a broom instead of a hose to clean your driveway or sidewalk and save 80 gallons of water every time. If your shower can fill a one-gallon bucket in less than 20 seconds. then replace it with a water-efficient showerhead. Collect the water you use for rinsing produce and reuse it to water houseplants. We're more likely to notice leak)( faucets indoors, but don't forget to check outdoor faucets. pipes, and hoses for leaks. Tune your shower to keep it under 5 minutes. You' ll save up to 1000 gallons a mo nth . Direct downspouts and other runoff towards shrubs and trees, or collect and use for your garden. Soak your pots and pans instead of letting the water run while you scrape them clean. Use a commercial car wash that recycles water. Tum off the water while you brush your teeth and save 4 gallon a minute. That 200 gallons a week for a family of four. Wash clothes only when you have a full load and save up 10 600 gallons each month. Tum the water off while you shampoo (Continued on Page 11 ) Ga.
