A recent exte nsive research study fo nded by the American Horse Council concluded that there are 9 .2 miJlion horses in the URited States. and 3.9 million are used in the recreation category. Two million people own horses and the d irect economic effect on the U.S. economy is $39 billion annually. This increases to a $ I02 billion annual economic impact when one considers secondary pending by ec1uine suppliers and employees. The specific numbers for Georgia were not provided but clearly there are a large number of horses in the state, Our guest colunm;st tMs iveek ;s Larry Wheat, a trail vol1111teer who ivorks 011 US Forest Servke and National Park Service trails in Georg;a . and a D;rector f or the Back CowW)' Horsemen of North Georgia. and likewise many are used for recreation, including trail riding . A concern that many trail riders share is the lack of adequate trails for equestrians, including necessary accommodations such as trailhead parking and support facilities. Many public land managers express the difficulty in maintaining the existing trails and keeping them in a safe and enjoyable condition. The end result is that trail users want more riding opportunities and the trail providers need volunteers . The tjming is good for volunteers to step up and offer their support to help improve the State's tra.il riding opportunities. That is a goal o f the recently formed Georg ia contingent o f the Back Country Horsemen of America (BCHA). The BCHA is a national organization that works with other equestrian groups, such as the American Horse Counc il, to represent equestrian trail interes1s in Congress. The BC HA mo nito rs legislative bills that could impact the opponunity to tra il ride on public lands. T he Back Country Ho rsemen o f Middle and South Georgia (www.bchsg.ocg) and the Back Country Ho rseme n of North Georg ia (www.bcbog.org) are part of the BC HA national organ ization. Wednesday, November 8, 2006 Feral Swine (Continued from Page 1) hunters are advised to protect themselves by wearing rubber gloves and glasses (to prevent blood and other body fl uids from splattering into eyes), and thoroughly washing their hands with soap and wann water afterwards. Hunters should be aware that pseudorabies can be deadly to hunting dogs. Though not highly transmissible from swine co dogs. once a dog is infected with the pseudorabies virus, it causes severe neurological disease and is nearly 100 percent fatal. Swine bruce llosis also can. be transmitted from feral swine to dogs. To prevent this from occurring, hunters should not allow their dogs to lick or eat any of the hunter-killed carcass. The Georgia Department of Agriculture considers feral swine the same as domestic swine in regard to transportation and control of disease. Producers and hunters are ren:tlnded that feral swine of any age moving within the State of Georgia must meet one of the follow ing requirements. in accordance with department rules 40-13-3- .03: (I) test .negative to an official brucellosis test and an official pseudorabies test wichin 30 days prior to movement; (2) originate from a validated brucellosis free herd and a qualified pseudorabies free herd; (3) be moved directly to a state or federally approved slaughte r establishment: (4) be moved directly to an approved hunting preserve; or (5) be moved directly to an approved swine slaughter sale. Anyone desi ring to import feral swine into Georgia from another state is required to have an entry permit from the department. negative pseudorabies and swine brucellosis test results on the animals in the shipment. and a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection. For entry permits to import swine. including feral swine , contact the Georgia Department of Agriculture Animal Lndustry Division at (.404) 656-3667. (Continued on Page 5) Ga .
