T here are several types of agricultural lime. They may be powdered or peUetized and may or may not contain magnesium. All are used to reduce soil acidity. For making pickles, use food grade "pickling lime" sold in grocery stores or from food suppliers. *** My neighbor has used ammonia to force cuttings from her shrubs. How do you do it? Yes, this common practice is relatively safe. In late winter or early spring, prune some twigs or branches of favorite flowering shrubs or trees such as quince, forsythia or cherry, a nd put them in a bucket of warm water. Place the cut end in the water and drop in a piece of cotton that has been dipped in a mmonia. Enclose the cuttings, along with the bucket in a plastic bag. T he fum es (Conrinued on Page 11 ) According to the University of Georgia Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development , state agricultural losses due to drought and excessive heat since March 2006 are estimated to total $8 19 .4 mmion. ''With the degree of losses suffered by our farmers. it is evident that the resources made available thus far from USDA. while greatly appreciated. will do little to provide our producers with any real economic relief." said Georgia Commissioner of Agricuiture Tommy lrvin. Last month lrvin contacted Georgia's Congressional Delegation to ask their assistance in obtaining disaster relief fundi ng from Congress. "The severity of the drought throughout the country and the number of Georgia counties that have received Secretarial Di sa!> ter Designations, should send the message to Congress that our fanners need direct assistance now: said Irvin . The Commissioner noted that the Senate included $4 billion in its version of the appropriation bill. and a eparate bill introduced and pending before the Senate include $6.5+ billion in emergency funding. "As more states and counties receive disaster declaration from the Secretary of AgricuJture. the better our NASS to Contact Ga. Ag Producers For Conservation, Pesticide Data The Georgia Field Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service soon will be contacting vegetable growers to complete the Vegetable Chemical Use Survey (VCUS) during the fall of 2006. "By taking part in this survey. growers can help ensure that accurate. real-world data are available to help government agencies and others make sound decision about the future availability of crop protection products: said Douglas Kleweno, director of the NASS Georgia Field Office. "lnfonnation from the survey will help ensure that USDA and other agencies have the most accurate. up-to-date chemical infonnation. traight from the source- producers themselves: Survey interviewers will contact M>mc 330 Georgia producers to gather data about vegetable nonche111ical pc t . upprcssion practices and pesticide applications. Agricultural pesticides arc subject to periodic re-registration, so NASS notes that it is imperative that producers rcpon pesticides used. Georgia farm operators selected 10 participate in thi year's survey soon will be notified by letter. and interviewers will visit participants at their convenience to collect the data. Survey responses will be compiled in NASS's Agricultural Chemical Usage2006 Vegetable Summary to be released July 30. 2007. From early October through midDecember, the Georgia NASS office will be conducting its Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP). Producers participation in CEAP will be especially critical this year as we gear up for the 2007 Farm BiJI: Kleweno noted. "CEAP provides USDA, policymakers and the public with a concrete measure of the benefits achieved through federal investment in agricultural conservation programs." Selected producers will be asked for infonnation about their fam1ing activities. land managemenl practices and participation in USDA conservation programs. The information gathered through CEAP will be combined with data from other sources to create a complete picture of environmental and conservation management conditions throughout the United States. USDA Announces Funds to Help Producer Affected by Drought. stated that Georgia would receive funds from USDA's Gra land Reserve Program. The article did not make it clear that these are not new funds but are funds that already arc allocated toward pending GRP applications for rental agreements in drought-affected areas.
