Everyone i familiar with the nursery rhyme, "OJd MacDonald had a fann, E- 1-E-I-o: But who exactly ii. Farmer Old MacDonald'? As a little girl, my very own Farmer Old M acDonald. my father. would ride me around in his dusty old pick-up truck and proudly show me the cows, hogs. and of course the long rows of peanuts and cotton on our family farm. Smiling from ear to ear. he would tell me the torie of the long dayi. and night on top of the tractor, planting. fenilizing, and harrowing his crops. I loved spending time with Farmer Old MacDonald. melling 1he freshly turned soil after the rain, "calling" .the cows. and even rrying ro catch the pigs. Farmer Old MacDonaJd took pride in ltis work and hared the farming experience with all he knew. Today, l believe it is our re ponsibility to share with others the imponance of Georgia Agricuhure. As an intern in the Georgia Department of Agriculture' Office of lnternational Trade, located in Bru sels, Belgium , part of my responsibilitie include promoting Georgia Agriculture in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Through our office, it i our job to promote Georgia products such a peache . pecans. and our unique Vidalia Onions. We take pride in the fact that Georgia commodities are in demand from countries all over the world. Furthering our efforts in sharing and promoting Georgia Agriculture. our office panicipmes in everal trade shows, and hai. even organized reverse trade mii.sions that brought European vegetable imponer. to tour Georgia farm . Our farmers are lhe greatest in the world, and we hould thank them for their hard work and dedication. Take pride in our cuhure and know that your very own "Farmer Old MacDonald," makes a difference not only to tbe great State of Georgia. but aJso to our nation. and to the world . Share with others the stories of growing up on a farm, riding four wheelers. hunting. and fishing. Just as a farmer plants and nurtures his crops. it is our responsibility to " plant" a eed of knowledge about agriculture into our youth , and nurture their minds with the life long les on learned from Lhe family fa1111. Agriculture is much more than funning. but without farmers. there is no agriculture. We must uppon our farmers or risk losing an important part of our history. It saddens me to think of the number of small farms. especially minority. that are dii.,appearing ac'ro s the state and our nation . Our traditions and legacy of the family farm must be cherished and passed down to share wilh future generations. So. the next time you purchase "Georgia Grown" in you r local supermarket. smile and think about o imple nursery rhyme, "Old M acDonaJd Had a Farm. L--------------------------------------~ Page 12 August Garden Chores Now is the time to start thinking about a fall vegetable garden . During AuguM you can set out transplant!> or broccoli , cabbage and caulinower: you al o can ow seeds of collards. kale, mustard, turnips and carrots. Webwonns can cause con ~ idernble damage to pecan trees by eating Lbe foliage. lf these pests are presem. they can be identified by web like nests at the end of branches. Begin checking for webworms thi month and conLinue through the fall. If they are present. remove and destroy the webs or apply a spray of Bacillu thuringiens i . Be sure to poke the sprayer wand through the webs that you can reach so that the spray will cover the leaves. Many trees and shrub are not setting fruit and flower buds for next sea on so it L important that the plants have sufficient water. A lack of water now will reduce next season's crop of fruit or nowers. Use mulch to help conserve moisrure and keep the soi l temperature cooler during the 'dog days of August. Also. use soaker ho es to water deeply and minimize water loss due to evaporation. Now is a good time to have your soil tested. Jf the results indicate lime is needed, keep in mind that it takes approximately five months for it to be effective. Till the lime into the garden soil after you complete your summer vegetable harvest. Thea by ' pring the soil will be ready for planting. To determine when your apples are ready for harveM. note the change in skin color and observe the s tem . When the red- and yellow-colored varieties are ripe, they will lose their greenish cast on the side facing the ground. The tems of ripe apples will separare easily from the spur (the short twig to which the fruit is auached) when you gently twi t the fruit in an upward direction. Ga.
