Georgia has tbe perfect climate to produce a consistent crop with good yields and sweet melons. Most of the state's watermelon crop is produced primarily in f'risp County in and a round Cordele. USDA reports it will accept one million acres offered under the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) general Mgn-up and that CRP participants intend to reenroll and extend contracts covering 13 million acres set to expire Sept. 20. 2007. For CRP general sign-up 33. which ran March 27 -April 28, 2006, USDA selected I million acres of the 1.4 million acres offered. USDA selected the most environmentally fragile of the cropland acres offered. ranking offers based on cost and the Environmental Benefits Index (EB[) factors of soil erosion, water quality, enduring benefits, air quality and wildlife enhancement. USDA's Farm Service Agency (FSA) mnked all offers on the same basi~ and con~1dered offers with an EBl score of at lea.<;t 242 as acceptable for enrollment. A Buyer 's Guide to Wa te rmelons *When buying whole watermelons, look for a fi rm, slightly dull rind and fully rounded sides. *Lf buyi.ng cut watermelon. look for firm, juicy. red flesh with no white streaks. *Watermelon seeds vary in colot from white to black. depending on the variety. and should be fullv mature and hard. *The lower side of a watermelon should be yellow in color where the melon came in contact with the !-.Oil. "lt's interesting that in the late 1970's, sightings of white-tailed deer were uncommon - even in their natural habitat. That is no longer the case and they now often are seen in urban areas. and even bear and coyote sightings have become more frequent in relation to the growth of the human population in Georgia: says WRD Assistant Game Management Chief Mark Whitney. "We want to help people understand the reasons why these sigbtings have become more frequent and who they can contact if they have questions or experience any problems." Residents should first understand what it is that attracts wildlife or other animals (Continued on Page I I) and examining them for firmness. Harvest Chinese and snow peas. which are eaten pod and all, when the pods are one and one-half to two inches long and the peas are about the size of BBs. The pods usually are picked five to seven days after flowering. Peppers Harvest fruits at any size, but most are picked when full-grown and mature. They may be left on the plant to ripen fully to a red or yellow color when they will be more mellow and sweet. Hot peppers, except Jalapeno. which remains green when ripe. usually are harvested at the red ripe stage. Po t at o e s "New" potatoes can be dug before the vines die. For large potatoes, wait until the vines die. Usc a spading fork and dig four to six inches beneath the soil surface. Handle the tubers gently during harvest to avoid bruising. Sweet Potatoes Harvest sweet potatoes in the fall before frost kills the vine. When digging the potatoes. be careful not to bruise them.
