Due 10 labor shortages in thjs industry. growers are turning more and more frequent ly 10 the H-2A program to bring in guest workers from other countries to harvest fresh market crop and meet other short-term labor needs. The H-2A program requires growers to pay prevailing wages. as determined through these surveys. Sur\tey calculation methods, based on federal guidelines. are extre me ly sensitive, and can be greatly skewed by lack of participation and/or the exclusion of significant growers. ln o rder to meet growing labor needs. it may be necessary for g rowers to participate in this program and their profitabili1y, or lack thereof. could be greatly in fluenced by their fail ure 10 respond 10 upcoming surveys. Farm Front U.S. Senate Confirms Buchanan Appointment The United S1a1e~ Senate recentl y confirmed the nomination of Gale A. Buchanan Ph.D.. former dean and director of 1he University o f Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, as U.S. Department of Agriculture Under Secretary for Research. Education and Economics. President George Bush nominated Buchanan for the position in January. ln his new role Buchanan wi ll oversee fou r USDA agenc ies: Agricultural Research Service; Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service; Economic Research Service; and the National Agricultural Statistics Service. Buchanan was dean and director of the UGA CAES until he re tired in April 2005. He served for 20 years on the Auburn University faculty before moving to Georgia as associate director for the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station and reside nt director of the Coastal Pla in Experiment Station.
