Deadline Approaches Department's Dairy Division Inspects Container Plants For Contest Entries The Georgia Department of half-pint jugs with varying neck sizes are Manufacturers of paper containers The August 31 deadline is fast approaching for submitting entries for the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Dog and Cat License Plate art contest. As part of a funding initiative for the Dog and Cat Sterilization Program (DCSP), the contest will determine a design for a new license plate to benefit the Program. To submit designs, participants should adhere to the following guidelines and rules: Art must be no larger than 14" tall x 11" wide Art must depict a dog and/or cat Art must contain no more than four colors (Continued on Page 11) You could see your artwork on the license plate for the Dog and Cat Sterilization program if your entry is selected as the winner. But you must enter for a chance to win. Agriculture's Dairy Division has the responsibility of monitoring all aspects of the production and processing of milk and dairy products to ensure their quality and safety. Included in this responsibility is the inspection of facilities that manufacture containers for milk and milk products. Routine inspections are conducted at nine single-service plants in Georgia that manufacture plastic jugs and cartons for milk and milk products, milk jug caps, and paper cartons for milk. During the inspections the general operating conditions of the plants are examined, as department employees check each facility for cleanliness, construction, and good manufacturing practices. Department inspectors even check to make sure the plant's air filters are changed on a regular basis to protect containers from contamination. In addition, each plant is inspected for possible insect problems. "We devote a considerable amount of resources to ensure milk and dairy products are safe for Georgia consumers," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. The Commissioner noted that the department does more testing of milk and dairy products than for any other single food product. In the plastic container manufacturing plants, gallon, half-gallon, quart, pint and formed by machines that melt the plastic and fill it with air to the shape of the containers. The plastic used in the process is made from a pelletized resin that comes from sources that meet the specifications of the code of federal regulations for food. Major out-of-state chemical companies also must meet federal specifications for the production of resin. At the CKS Packaging Inc. plant in Atlanta, pelletized plastic resin is brought in by rail car and stored in silos until ready for use in container production. Containers are formed by machines that melt the plastic and fill it with air to the shape of the container. The resin used in the manufacturing process must meet the federal specifications for plastic used for milk and dairy products. Agroterrorism Preparedness Focus of Partnership must use paper stock that is manufactured to code of federal regulations standards. The manufacturers cut, print, and form the cartons for final forming and filling at milk plants. Quality control standards established under rules and regulations by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and administered by the Georgia Department of Agriculture Dairy Division help guide companies in the disposal of and recycling of containers that have imperfections. Although FDA regulations require inspections of milk and dairy product container plants only every three months, the department's Dairy Division inspects these facilities every other month and takes samples on a monthly basis. "It does no good to place a fresh, untainted dairy product into a container that is defective or unclean," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "Our inspection of the manufacturing facilities and the sampling of containers produced by them help ensure that consumers receive safe, wholesome, high-quality dairy products for their food dollars." Notice Ad Deadline for the August 31 issue is noon, August 17. The Georgia Agroterrorism Committee and the Georgia National Guard inaugurated their partnership to fight agroterrorism at a meeting last month at Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta, Ga. The meeting was sponsored by the Agroterrorism Committee of the Georgia Homeland Security Task Force and hosted by 4th Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team of the Georgia National Guard. The purpose of the meeting was to share expertise on how to best prepare and respond to agriculture and food-related acts of terrorism. Adjutant General David Poythress and Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin (center) are shown with members of the 4th Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team of the Georgia National Guard, the Georgia Agroterrorism Committee, and laboratory personnel at Dobbins Air Reserve Base. Invited guests included laboratory personnel who routinely test for chemical and biological agents in animals, plants, food, and agriculture chemical products. Attendees learned about the Georgia National Guard's mobile laboratory capabilities, proper biocontainment, sample collection and personal protective equipment used with contagious pathogens. "I am glad to see the facilities that will be available for use in case of an agriculture or food-related emergency," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "As the lead agency in the state in charge of agriculture and food defense, my staff is committed to doing everything in its power to protect the people of Georgia and the state's agriculture industry." Maj. Gen. David B. Poythress, Georgia's Adjutant General said, "I am encouraged by the many professionals from numerous state agencies that have come together to address the critical topic of food supply safety as wc continue our focus on the global war on terrorism." Cook over medium heat until the mixture is brown. Some say "the color of a copper penny". Add onion and green pepper. Saute until vegetables are limp. Add seasonings, tomato sauce and enough water to keep it from being too thick but not gumbo watery, approximately 2 to 3 cups. Cook slowly until vegetables are done {about 45 minutes). Stir occasionally to prevent sticking_ Add shrimp and cook until shrimp turn pinl<, about 5 minutes. (If using frozen shrimp, thaw first under cold running water.) Add parsley or chopped green onion just before serving. Serve over hot cooked rice . Ester Case Lumpkin County Testing notes: The consistency was just right for serving over rice on a plate. I substituted 2 teaspoons Creole seasoning instead of the red pepper and salt. Zucchini Squares 3 cups thinly sliced zucchini 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup cooking oil 4 eggs, lightly beaten 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, minced 1 cup Bisquick 1/2 teaspoon oregano 1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt 112 cup Parmesan cheese 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes Sprinkle salt over zucchini and let stand 20 minutes. Drain well; blot with paper towel. Combine oil and eggs in a large mixing bowl. Stir in remaining ingredients. Pour into a greased 13x9-inch baking dish. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Cut into squares to serve_ Bessie Simmons Cordele, GA Testing notes: This could be used as a main dish for lunch with the addition of a fruit salad or served as appetizers when cut into small squares. All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within past 12 months. Negative reports are valid for 12 months from the sample date. A copy of this test report must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) cannot be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing any equine. Any falsification of Coggins tests can result in fines and/or suspension of advertising privileges in the Market Bulletin.
