Even before September 11, 200 I, the Georgia Department of Agriculture was focused on agriculture security - food security, environmental security, and economic security. An integral part of the state's agriculture security before 9/11, and now, is the department's laboratories. "The consumer must have confidence in the food supply chain and the farmer must be assured that the seed and feed are reliable to produce the crops, or else there is no economic security in the agriculture sector," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. The department operates a number of chemical and microbiological laboratories to provide support to the regulatory functions designed to protect agriculture and consumer interests and to ensure a supply of safe food and fiber for consumers. The labs performing most of the testing and analysis for crop Special Handicraft Edition See Page 10 production are located in Tifton. Most of the testing in the food supply chain for consumer protection is done in the Atlanta labs. Four laboratory units are located at the two sites. The Food Microbiology and Dairy Laboratories and the Food Chemistry and Pesticide Residue Laboratories are in the Agriculture Building in Atlanta. The Feed and Fertilizer Laboratories and the Pesticide Formulation, Soil Termiticide, Treated Wood, Use/Misuse, and Groundwater Laboratories are in Tifton. "Most people never realize how many testing systems and monitors are part of the production and delivery of food and fiber to the consumer," said Commissioner Irvin. The Georgia Department of Agriculture has always worked closely with other state and federal agencies in handling regulatory functions that coincide at the same location or require assistance from one or more agencies. Since 9/11, the department has expanded its efforts to work closely with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency and other related agencies to prepare for potential threats to the public's health. "We are developing a closer relationship with the Division of Public Health Lab in order to supplement their chemical analytical capabilities and have enrolled in FERN, the Food Emergency Response Network of laboratories for both chemical and microbiological analysis," said Dr. Reuben Beverly, director of the Chemical Laboratories of the Georgia Department of Agriculture. FERN is now a division of the Food Safety Inspection Service Office of Public Health Science of USDA. The division is co-located with the FSIS Eastern Laboratory in Athens. The Chemical Laboratories deal with homeland security issues from both the chemical safety and food safety standpoints. Some 5,000 tests are performed each year on food samples in the Atlanta laboratories. The Food Microbiology Laboratory tests for foodbome pathogens, such as Salmonella, E. coli Ol 57:H7, and Listeria monocytogenes. The labs also analyze food to detect heavy metals, organic toxins and poisons and look for unlisted potential allergens. The Dairy Lab is run under the Food and Drug Administration dairy testing (Continued on Page 11 Notice Ad Deadline for the August 17 issue Dept. Clean Day Program Assists in Proper Disposal of Pesticides is noon, August 3. Approximately 20,000 pounds of canceled and suspended waste pesticides were collected at the Georgia Department of Agriculture's "Georgia Clean Day" held June 29, in Valdosta. The pesticides were collected because some of the chemicals used by Georgia growers in the past are now banned or canceled and in need of disposal. Since it is too expensive for many growers to hire a waste disposal company, the program gives growers the opportunity to safely and legally dispose of the materials at no charge. Pesticides were delivered to the collection site at Tractor Supply Company on North Saint Augustine Road from across the state, including cities as far away as Atlanta. Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and the University of Georgia at Tifton. also participated by bringing in unwanted chemicals from Tifton. "We hire a licensed hazardous waste disposal contractor who collects, transports, and disposes of the waste pesticides. No fees are charged for bringing the materials for disposal," said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin. The department organizes and administers the waste pesticide collection program, which it established in 1995 with the Agricultural Chemical Association of Georgia (ACAG), and the UGA Cooperative Extension Service, along with the support of Georgia Farm Bureau. "Our department is committed to protecting the environment and will continue to promote safe handling of pesticides," Irvin said. "We are pleased that we can provide this service so that canceled or suspended pesticide products can be disposed of properly." For the Georgia Clean Day in Valdosta, the department teamed up with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service and the Governor's Honors Program. Fourteen agri-science students in the honors program assisted with pre-registration and promotion for the event and helped direct traffic at the collection site. Ed Gornik (left) and Tony Vurrage, chemists with Clean Harbors Environmental Services, are shown with three barrels of cyanides that were collected during the Georgia Clean Day held recently in Valdosta. Clean Harbors is the licensed hazardous waste disposal contractor that collects, transports and disposes of the waste pesticides for the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Calcium chloride is also available in the form of de-icing salt, which you can find at hardware stores. Mix two tablespoons to a gallon of water and spray two or three times a week. Cracking Tomatoes can begin to crack during warm, rainy periods. This is especially true if such weather occurs after a dry spell. The tomatoes expand too fast causing cracks in the walls of the fruit. When making your tomato plant purchases, look for varieties that are resistant to cracking. The best way to avoid the problem is to keep the moisture supply_ as consistent as possible throughout the growing season. Catfacing Catfacing is another kind of cracking or scarring of tomatoes. The fruit develops unusual swelling and streaks of scar tissue. Catfacing is not a disease, but is a condition caused by abnormal development of the pistil of the tomato flower at blossom time. Cool weather is believed to be the cause of the flower problem. Blossom drop Cool, night temperatures (below 55 degrees Fahrenheit) will sometimes cause early season blossoms to fall off the plant. Some varieties will keep their-blossoms and set fruit in cool weather, but most varieties do not. Blossom drop also can occur when night temperatures get above 75 degrees in the summer. This can make it difficult to get a summer-long crop of tomatoes in hot sections of the South. Curling of leaves Curling or "leaf roll" is very common, but will not harm tomato production. This is most noticeable once the plants are about 12 inches high. As the vines become "bushy," the new leaves can hide the older leaves, making them curl. Curling also can occur when tomato vines are pruned too much. Sunscald This condition develops when green or ripening tomatoes get too much exposure to the hot sun. The first evidence of sunscald is the appearance of a yellowwhite patch that appears on the side of the tomato facing the sun. The area gets larger as the fruit ripens and then becomes gray-white. Some tomato varieties produce a lot of foliage that provides the fruit protection from too much sun. However, this is not true of all varieties, so be careful that you do not over prune plants and remove their shade. You also can grow them in cages where the plants will develop protective foliage. Although these problems might make some of your tomatoes unattractive, they are still edible. Simply cut away the affected portions and enjoy the remainder of the fruit. The palm frond makes its appearance in the military medals of many countries such as the Croix de Guerre with Palm awarded by France and Belgium for valor during the world wars and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm that was awarded to all members of the U.S. Armed Forces and other nations for valorous achievement in combat during the Vietnam Conflict. I consider palms as the first souvenir. In a time before post cards, Medieval European pilgrims would bring back a palm frond as a token of having visited the Holy Land. These pilgrims became known as palmers. The first time Romeo meets Juliet he tells her "My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand to smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss" and Juliet reminds him that "palm to palm is holy palmers' kiss." In other words, let's just hold hands. Of course Juliet gives in, and these two star-crossed lovers are on their way to a tragic end. As children on family vacation, my sister and I would squeal with delight when we saw the first palmetto as we approached the beach. For us, like the palmers of old, it was a symbol of a faraway and magical place.
