Today, with a membership of over 700 pest control companies representing over 4900 individuals, The Georgia Pest Control Association holds five annual conferences and provides hundreds of hours Our guest columnist this week is Hal Coleman, President, Georgia Pest Control Association, P.O. Box 2108. Norcross, GA 30071. of training throughout the State each year. This is done to insure that our pest management professionals are well trained and able to keep pace with the highly sophisticated and diverse pest control technology that is available currently. It is an ever changing business and Georgia is considered as one of the leading states in the nation when it comes to professional pest management. Spring and Summertime in the Southland is definitely a "Season of Plenty" when it comes to bugs. Termites, ants, roaches, fleas, spiders, crickets ....not to mention rats, mice and other various pests, all come out in full force to invade our homes and workplaces, bite and sting our bodies, contaminate our food, spread disease and generally do whatever they can to make our lives a little Jess comfy. The termite season is here and so far it has been great (if you are in my line of work, that is)! Swarming subterranean termites seem to be everywhere. The telephones are ringing off the hook and it is going to be a very busy year. This can be attributed to the early warm weather and adequate rainfall in March and April. Mosquito season is upon us also and, with the public awareness of the West Nile Virus, folks are already taking steps to deal with the mosquito populations around their homes and neighborhoods. Pest control has come a long way in the last 50 years, but the pests remain the same......ever vigilant, tenacious, stubborn, hard to reach, hungry and in pursuit of you and me. And, 2005 promises to be a great year for BUGS! If you have a pest question or would like more information about pest management professionals in your area, you may contact the Georgia Pest Control Association at 770-417-1881. ag consumer line Asiatic Soybean Rust Found in Seminole County Bees are destroying my deck; I've found 20 bored holes. What can I do to control them? Carpenter bees are a nuisance. They bore into wooden decks, siding or any exposed wood around the home. The female carpenter bee chews tunnels into the wood, where she makes cells to lay her eggs. Control of these insects can be difficult and timeconsuming because each individual tunnel must be treated. Although wood that has been newly painted is less likely to be attacked, painting does not make the wood immune to attack. Homeowners should try to control these insects whenever they are observed boring into decks or sliding. Dusting around the entrance to the tunnel wjth 5 percent Sevin dust is an effective control method. Sevin is an insecticide that is highly toxic to bees. The female carpenter bee will come into contact with the insecticide when it enters the tunnel and die. However, do not plug the holes because there may be some eggs in the tunnels and the newly hatched bees will unplug the (Continued on Page 12) 1st Official Georgia Case in 2005 The Asiatic Soybean Rust fungus that blew into south Georgia last fall has been confirmed on volunteer plants that sprouted from soybean seeds left from the 2004 crop in a Seminole County field. Georgia Department of Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin said last week that diagnosticians at the University of Georgia's Plant Disease Clinic in Tifton positively identified the disease Wednesday, April 27, on the Seminole County samples taken from soybean plants. 'This is the first confirmed case of Asiatic Soybean Rust in 2005 in the U.S. outside of Florida," Commissioner Irvin said. "More significantly, it was detected on a volunteer soybean plant, indicating that it has probably over wintered here in Georgia. "We figured that it more than likely would become an annual disease our soybean producers would have to deal with, so we made sure that fungicides are available and ready for farmers who will need them this year to manage the disease in their fields," Irvin said. Asiatic Soybean Rust reduces the productivity of soybean plants and having to use the fungicides to prevent the rust increases the costs to farmers and consumers. Georgia's 2004 soybean harvest yielded more than 8.3 million bushels on 240,000 acres and was valued at more than $44.3 million. "We will continue our heavy monitoring and surveys with the University of Georgia. Anyone who spots a possible infection should contact the local Cooperative Extension Service," Irvin said. The faculty and staff from the University of Georgia's College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences are working closely with the Georgia Department of Agriculture to scout for Asiatic soybean rust across the state. Monitoring plots have been established at more than 25 locations in addition to the sites county agents are monitoring. Pathologists suspect that the disease, which is easily spread through windbome spores, was brought into the state from South America in the fall of 2004 by (Continued on Page 10) Dept. News Service Provides Information To Help Producers in Marketing Livestock Access to accurate and timely livestock price information is essential for Georgia livestock producers to effectively market their product. Providing such information is a service of the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Livestock Market News Service. A part of the Department's Animal Industry division, this service provides the state's beef, goat and swine industries with market reports on supply, demand, price, trends, movement and other information affecting the trading of livestock and meat. Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, livestock reports assist producers and promote orderly marketing by providing the industry with the tools to determine where and when to buy and sell livestock, meat, grain and their respective products. Related industries that process and distribute agricultural products also make considerable use of market news reports to conduct and plan business operations. In Special Handicraft Edition See Page 10 addition, Market News reports reflect consumer preferences back through marketing channels to producers. As a result, statistics are prepared from livestock reports and used by all segments of the industry, agricultural colleges, universities, government agencies and private research organizations. Market News records livestock prices, grouping them into similar categories based upon USDA grade standards. Prices are not reported from the absolute lowest price to the absolute highest price. Bulk sales are used to give buyers and sellers a reasonable expectation of fair market value. Reasons some individual livestock will not be included within market reports are: All livestock must be considered thrifty, which is different from livestock that are considered healthy. Livestock can be considered free of disease and parasites and still be considered unthrifty. If for any reason livestock are considered unthrifty, they are not included ill the report. Some examples of this would include: *Livestock that are so extremely thin as to appear emaciated due to poor forage. This could affect the logical slaughter potential. *A rough hair coat: an example of this would be cattle grazing endophyte infested (Continued on Page 12) Notice Ad Deadline for the June 8 issue is noon, May 25. Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesda) May 11, 2005 Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Published Every Other Week All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the Bulletin must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the Bulletin. * Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to advertise in the Market Bulletin. Page 12 THE MARKET BULLETIN May Marketing Livestock Garden Chores (Continued from Page 1) Inspect azaleas this month for the presence of insects. Yellow foliage may indicate the presence of either lace bugs or spider mites, which are found on the underside of leaves. If you find black deposits or small insects about one-eighth inch long with lacy wings, it means lace bugs are present. Spider mites are too small to be seen, but webbing on the undersides of leaves indicates their presence. Control with a pesticide approved for use on these pests. If you have a vegetable garden planted this spring, you 'II find a number of various kinds of beetles and worms will be feeding on your vegetables this month. Many of these pests can be controlled with the pesticide, Sevin. Before purchasing Sevin or any other pesticide, read the label information to be certain the product is effective for the pests you want to control. Also, be sure to apply pesticides according to label directions. Fusiform rust, if it is present, will be in evidence on pine trees this month. Also known as canker, this disease appears as an orange powdery material in swellings on the trunk and limbs. There is no cure for canker on large trees. If only small limbs are affected, they can be removed to prevent the spread of the disease into the trunk. If the tree is small and the trunk is affected, you will need to remove or replace the tree. Stake tomato plants and pole beans this month, and thin squash and cucumber plants to three plants per hill. Hydrangeas, azaleas, begonias, caladiums and geraniums given as potted plants for Mother's Day need not be discarded after the blooms have faded. You can transplant these flowers to a location in your landscape. Geraniums will do fine in full sun, but azaleas and hydrangeas can survive well in sun or (Continued on Page 11) fescue or other feeding challenges. *Cattle with blemishes in their eyes or other lumps, bumps, warts, etc. *A calf that has not been weaned or vaccinated, not bunk broke or has never seen an automatic drinker, could be considered unthrifty; unless the calves were present in large enough numbers to quote separately. The buyer has a very small window (less than one week) to build immunity against disease, break the calf to feed at a bunk and train the calf to drink from an automatic water trough. Orily the bulk of the sales for a tested category or standard grade are reported. Producers with genetic knowledge of how their cattle perform can find their cattle easily with the USDA Livestock reports. Those producers without this knowledge often are confused, wondering where their livestock are, or why they have not been included within the report. Some producers are puzzled why their animals are discounted. The following are These 10- and five-pound turnips were grown by I. L. Smith of Cartersville, Ga. Smith reported the largest one also measured 22 inches in circumference. Georgia Bonding Law Affects Farmers and Produce Dealers just a few of the many reasons livestock may be discounted. Breed - Certain breeds may be discounted, and whether producers believe this is just or unjust, it is important to understand why this occurs. For example, Brahman or Brahman cross are heat tolerant breeds and do not grow much hair. As a result, they do not tolerate cold weather; consequently, buyers from northern states may not want to buy them during winter months. If they do purchase cattle of these breeds, they may do so at a discount. Color - Most livestock with an unknown genetic background are purchased based on weight and color. For instance, an order buyer may receive an order for a load of black and black baldy cattle. Ten years ago these cattle could have been discounted due to small frame size, however, today, the Certified Angus Beef (CAB) premium have increased the demand for these cattle. As a result, the demand for cattle of other colors may have declined and the cattle are therefore discounted. Producers may question the fairness of this practice, but it is occurring nonetheless due to market supply and demand. Weight - It is more difficult to make load lots of heavier cattle in the South since most cattle are shipped as weaned calves or short yearlings. Cattle over 750 pounds are fewer in number and can be discounted if they are marketed in less than load lots. According to industry surveys, health and lack of uniformity ranked as the categories in need of the most improvement for cattle in the Southeast. Therefore, to add value to Georgia- calves, they must be delivered in good health - weaned, pre-conditioned, castrated, healed, and vaccinated. Also, cattle must be of similar size and shape with a predictable outcome, and supplied in load lot groups where the identity of Southeast cattle can be maintained. Editor's Note: Each month the Market bulletin publishes a Livestock Quotations column that provides a summary of market prices from the previous month. Producers can obtain daily price information by calling (229) 226-1641. As fruit and vegetable harvests near the peak of the season in Georgia, produce dealers and farmers are reminded of the requirements set forth in the Dealer in Agricultural Products law. State law requires that anyone engaged in the business of buying Georgia agricultural products directly from a Georgia producer be licensed and bonded by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. This law covers out-of-state buyers of Georgia commodities, as well as those within the state. The only dealers who are exempt are those who certify that they buy exclusively in cash. In addition, dealers who purchase agricultural products now are required to pay for the commodities within 20 days following the delivery in the absence of a written contract. Both ag product dealers and farm producers also are required to jointly issue a certificate of receipt and quality to the producer or the producer's agent. The certificate of receipt and quality must include the following information: name and address of the agricultural product dealer; name and address of the producer; delivery date and time of receipt; description of the product as to identity, quantity, quality, condition, and grade of the product; price per unit and terms of the transaction. "Even with the bonding program and the requirements for prompt payment, nothing takes the place of a properlywritten contract when farmers and buyers are dealing with perishable products," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. Farmers are advised to require proof of bonding from buyers, even if they have dealt with the dealer in the past. Without these precautions, there is little recourse at the state level to recover losses if a produce dealer goes bankrupt or otherwise defaults on his or her obligations. Likewise a produce dealer may have difficulty in substantiating the actual condition of the produce purchased if it is received in poor condition. The federal Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act offers additional protection to growers doing business with merchants, dealers and brokers handling fresh and frozen vegetables in interstate commerce. These companies or individuals are required to be licensed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which can define unfair practices and help resolve disputes between growers and interstate firms. For information on bonded dealers or licensing and bonding procedures, call your local state farmers' market or the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Licensing and Bonding Section at (404) 656-3725. ag consumer line (Continued from Page 1) holes when they emerge. Yes, you can grow eggplants in one of two ways. You can start the eggplant seeds indoors eight to 10 weeks before the last expected frost in your area or you can buy transplants. Eggplants are very tender and are even more susceptible to cold temperatures than tomatoes. Transplant your seedlings after the soil has warmed and the danger of frost has passed. If the soil is too cold, it may inhibit growth. Plant your eggplants about a week after you plant your tomatoes. If you have questions. or problems with services or products regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, you may write the Office of Consumer Services, 19 Martin Luther King Drive, Room 224, Atlanta, Georgia 30334 or call 4041656-3645 (Atlanta area) or tollfree, I -800-282-5852.
