When the Humane Care for Equines Act was passed by the state legislature in 1992, the Department was given the responsibility to insure thaf all equine-aie provided w~th adequate food and -water, and are treated and cared for in a humane manner. ,The Act provides for inspections, organiz~tions. concerning equine issues; and responds to equine involved in disasters. :. . The department has .two ..impound facilities: the Critical Care Facility in DeKalb County and the Jasper County Impound. No tax dollars go toward the rehabilitation process for. this program: Reliance upori. individual donations, organizations, and the sale of impounded equine keep the. program i:nonetarily afloat. However,-itis the hard work and commitment by the GDA staff who effectively rehabilitate the equine under their care. There are only 1.2 inspectors in the field statewide. .
