Joining in-the festivities w~re Rob Mayfield, Vice President of Mayfield Dairy Farms Inc., Bailey Wa:rr, Little Miss Early County Peanut, and Budd? McNutty, National Peanut Board mascot.. March 10 was officially proclaimed as Agriculture. Day in Georgia, and in celebration of the event, the Georgia Department of Agriculture hosted a special ceremony at the State Capitol that included the signing of a proclamation by the Governor and recognition of the winners of the department's annual Agricultur~ Day Contest. All contest winners, honorable mentions, and their guests. were invited to the ceremony at the Capitol in Atlanta March I 0. During tl}e ceremony, Governor George "Sonny" Perdue addressed the group and sigried. and .presented to Agritulture Commissioner -Tommy-Irvin a-proclamation designating March 10 as Agriculture Day in Georgia for 2004. Commissioner Irvin also spoke to the. group and presented cash awards, medals and certificates to the essay and photo/art winners. After the ceremony, attendees and their guests were invited to a reception at the Georgia -Department of Agriculture headq4arters. , Contest entries were required to address the theme, "The Importance of the Georgia Department of Agriculture .. to Our Everyday Lives," by highlighting the regulatory responsibilities, as well as the consumer services provided by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. The contest was sponsored by the department 'and the Georgia Agriculture in the Classroom Council Inc. The written category was open to students in grades 4 - 8 and 9 - 12, and the .visual art category was open to all age groups. "This is the 21st consecutive year.the department has been a sponsor of the annual Agriculture Day Contest," Irvin said. "These days, so many of our young people have n~. first hand experience with agriculture, so we are happy that we can offer this contest as a means to get them thinking about our state's most important industry. We received many fine entries arid we would like to thank all those that participated."
