No. 4 'II . f>at 'DIUWlUt New Ce-nter Aids Ga. Aquaculture "Fresh, not fr::izen" is the new mantra for seafood. prc-duced on the farm at , the Georgia Center for Aquaculture Development at Fort Valley State University. No ~longer is it .necessary to go to sea or to own acres of ponds to harvest fresh fish and prawns.- Now it _s possible to become an aquaculture procucer with small property holdings ~ with or without ponds - and , s__pply custome;s with fish, prawns or produce througJ-out the year, ensuring a steady market SLpply and income. In 2003 the center began on FVSU's campus with the mission of introducing Georgians to aqLaculture as an alternative agricultural crcp that can supplement farm incomes. Our guest cclumn/.st this week is Pat Duncan, Ph.D., Director, Georgia Center for Aquacultu.-e Development, Fort Valley State University, 1005 State University Drive, Fort Valley, GA 31030. The recirculcting aquaculture system is a new technolJgy that allows producers to raise fish wi~h 'little water in a small space. Suburban or urban farmers - along . with traditional :-ural farmers - can grow aquacultural crops with the usual pond . culture, c_age :;ulture or with newer improved closec recirculating systems. Georgia Center for Aquaculture Development \\ill demonstrate different recircula_ting s;-stems to help farmers develop their aq"Jaculture. enterprises into viable commercial entities.. In addition, the center will improve the production. methods for different species of fish in recirculating systems, and also will investigate the Jse of plants and fish -in aquaponic systems and in polyculture or multispecies p-oduction systems. The goal is to imprcve on culture systems "to achieve optimum production and profit. The Center also will be. a meeting place where pe:Jple can exchange ideas and promote the advancement of aquaculture in Georgia. Global food ->ecurity and the Sept. I f terrorist attacks have increased interest in purchasing food produced locally in secure, safe, 1ear-organic conditions grown by prodl!cers consumers know. As (Contirned on Page 15) Wednesday. However, since the attack of September 11, 200 J, these laboratories have been increasingly important in efforts to insure the safety of Georgians from acts of agro-terrorism and other threats to public_ health. "Our department works cooperatively with the Georgia Department of Human Resources Division of Public Health to both monitor and respond to emergency situations that could potentially affect the health of our citizens," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. After the attack, the department's Chemical Laboratories . Division determined that additional resources would be needed in order for the department to improve its ability to respond quickly and efficiently in emergency situations and it is currently working to enhance its . existing technological capa9ilities.
