When most folks still lived on their own farms, they cut their Christmas tree from their own property. Today, most of our citizens live in towns or cities, but they still enjoy selecting and cutting their own Christmas trees at one of the chooseand-cut tree farms located throughout the state. Our guest columnist this week is Coy Dillahunty, E.rerntii"e Director of the Georgia Christmas Tree Association, P.O. Box 274. Concord. GA 30206: lnj(J@gachristmastree.com The Georgia Christmas Tree Association has a number of growers with a great selection of trees to offer this year, and consumers can certainly find a variety and size of tree to meet their needs. Although varieties such as Virginia pine, white pine and Eastern red cedar have long been favorites and remain popular with consumers, two other varieties, the Leyland cypress and Murray cypress, have risen to the forefront as the leading sellers on Georgia Christmas Tree Farms. If you like the idea of buying a balled-and-burlapped tree that you can replant after the Christmas season, these new varieties make excellent choices. The landscape industry also has recognized the value of these cypress varieties and they (Continued on Page 11) Farm Front Rainfall during October was well below normal over most of the state, according to the Nov. 12 crop report from the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. Temperatures were generally above normal to near normal during the month, and the drier than normal weather has provided excellent harvest conditions for fall harvested crops. Based on a survey of growers contacted around Nov. 1, crop yields remained the same as last month for com, peanuts and soybeans, while cotton showed a slight increase. Georgia's cotton production for 2004 is expected to total 1.80 million (Continued on Page 11) Happy Thanksgiving Tommy and Bernice Irvin and the Market Bulletin staff Labor Department to Conduct Survey of Ga. Growers A task force from Georgia Department of Labor will be conducting a wage and practices survey in early December for growers harvesting cabbage and greens and/or planting Vidalia Onions. Due to labor shortages in this industry, growers are turning more and more frequently to the H-2A program to bring in guest workers from other countries to harvest fresh market crops and meet other short-term labor needs. The H-2A program requires growers to pay prevailing wages, as determined through these surveys. Survey calculation methods, based on Federal guidelines, are extremely sensitive, and can be greatly skewed by lack of participation and/or the exclusion of significant growers. The surveys are voluntary, but in order to meet growing (Continued on Page 11) Proper Tree Selection and Care Ensure More Enjoyable Christmas Experience Choosing a real Christmas tree can be a fun outing for the whole family. The Georgia Christmas Tree Association. the National Christmas Tree Association, and the USDA Agricultural Research Service offer the following hints to help ensure consumers select the best tree to suit their needs and to keep it fresh and beautiful during the holiday season. * Don't buy a tree that is losing green needles, or has dry, brittle twigs or a sour, musty smell. You can do a freshness test to help in your selection, but this will not be of about one foot. You should not see an excessive amount of green needles fall to the ground. Some loss of interior brown needles is normal and will occur over the lifetime of the tree. * In selecting a tree, make sure it is not too large for the area where it will be displayed and that the "handle" at the bottom is long enough to allow the trunk to fit your tree stand. Otherwise, it will be necessary to remove large branches near the (Continued on Page 11) Choose-and-Cut Christmas Tree Farms See Pages 5-7 needed if you are cutting the tree yourself or having someone help cut it for you at a choose-and-cut farm. If you are selecting a cut tree, gently grasp a branch between your thumb and forefinger and pull it toward you. Very few needles should come off in your hand if the tree is fresh. Also, vigorously shake the tree or drop it onto the end of its truck several times from a height Commissioner Inducted Into Ag Hall of Fame Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin was inducted into the Habersham County Agricultural Hall of Fame at the Habersham County FarmCity Breakfast held at North Georgia Technical College in Clarkesville Nov. 16. The Commissioner was honored primarily for his many years of service to the agriculture industry of (Continued on Page 12) Notice Ad Deadline for the Dec. 22 issue is noon Dec. 8 Soybean Rust Found in South Ga. Will Not Affect This Year's Harvest The Asiatic Soybean Rust confirmed last week from a sample taken in a Seminole County field will not affect this year's crop, but Georgia Department of Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin said his staff is already working closely with USDA and the Georgia Cooperative Extension Service to prevent the fungal pathogen from impacting next year's crop. "This year's crop already had reached maturity. so the yield will not be affected," Irvin said. "We 're working now to get approval from EPA for using the fungicides that will be effective in reducing the effect this disease has on soybean plants. It is a very manageable disease, but could be very costly. Until soybean rust-resistant varieties become available, we will have to manage any infestation through early detection and the use of several treatment options." Georgia is the fourth southeastern state to confirm the presence of the soybean rust pathogen. Louisiana and Mississippi announced positive test results earlier this month and Florida announced confirmation last week. Pathologists suspect that Hurricane Ivan brought the disease, which is easily spread through wind-borne spores, from South America. "Every county agent that has soybean production has been asked to begin surveys to determine where this disease has spread in Georgia," Irvin said. "Extension specialists in Georgia tell us that since the disease is adapted to tropical regions, it may not survive yearround in most of Georgia, except in the (Continued on Page 12) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday November 24, 2004 '47 SN Ford tractor, ready for work, 6 volt 16' equipment trailer wood floor, fenders, AC G w/equipment, $2500. Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current laboratory report (not more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious weeds and germination for each seed lot advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory reports will be returned upon request. Any ads for agricultural seed submitted for publication without this documentation will not be published. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as 6738, Haskell and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act.
